Dear everybody, Im very satisfied with my s6500 that I've had for 8 months. One question though: Can anyone please tell me what the manual focus 'system' is good for? The AF seems to work very well in all situations I have met, and the manual focus bottom to 'pre'-focus (the yellow ring lights up etc) - doesn't it simply do the same thing as the AF?

I'll be happy about comments or examples that can show me what the manual focus is good for

I use it for checking focus on super macros. In this shot, which I took a few minutes ago to illustrate my point, I wanted to check that the small print in the centre was in focus when I pressed the shutter. With super macros it is very easy to take a not quite focussed image.

The enlarged central area enhances the use of the EVF immenseley.

I have an S9500 which has the same lens as your S6500fd. IMHO the manual focus ring is so unresponsive that it's good for nothing!

There are many times that you might want to use manual focus:
  • the scene is so dark that autofocus doesn't work (reliably)
  • the subject is moving fast and you want to pre-focus
  • the subject is behind something else (such as an animal in undergrowth)
  • you're creating a stitched panorama and you want to fix the focus on infinity
  • you want to fix the depth of field as 'X' to infinity (depending on aperture)
  • you're shooting on a tripod and you want to focus off centre
  • you're shooting at high speed and don't want the focus delay for each shot
I'm sure I'll think of more if I spend enough time. IMHO the manual focus is by far the weakest apect of these cameras and desparately needs fixing.

I have a S6500fd and I completely agree that the manual focus ring is very, very bad. Especially in those situations where you would need it.

It doesn't work like an SLR lens but it is better than pushing buttons :¬)

At least it is an option. On most digicams the manual focus is unuseable.

Maybe use the EVF on 60 FPS to see the focus response better in those situations.

Cheers, Rob : ) Fujifilm s9600 lovin' it!

It's to hard to use, just don't use it.

Fujifilm Finepix E550 and F20
Nikon D40 and 55-200 VR.

i found it useless when i first bought it but use with macro all the time now.

The camera doesnt tell lies (ok maybe sometimes)

My conclusion: The 'manual focus' system really sounds nice and right (Im former 35mm slr user) but basically, as the general AF works so well as it really does, - the manual focus doesn't hurt anything, but it is not of much practical use.

I cant catch an eye of some eagle ... but ive done a couple od shots that are allright.

Im not so proud and dont wanna show-off .. i just think they are decent and that manual focus is really usable in good light.

I think that the bigger problem is actually smal EVF, who makes the MF unusable.
