I am not a fan of photographer Dean Collins, but none-the-less would be interested to see what he wrote.

My problem is downloading the pdf from Yahoo Groups. Yahoo has had consistant problems with client privacy. Do you know of another place to get this info? Or if you could email the file I will review it & I will report back any relevant opinions.

I'm another that doesn't trust Yahoo enough to register with them.

I detest the fact that just to VIEW I must register. It would be one thing if Yahoo was creating the content; but, they are not.

Let them slide into oblivion along with Excite. :)

BUT, I am a GREAT believer in the value of PVC for the photographer in SO many areas.

It's not like they are a credit bureau that will check out the data, enter some phony information and download the file if you want it. I'm not disagreeing with you about yahoo, I was just trying to post something I thought might be of interest to others.

Sorry...

Not only that, but getting an account set up on yahoo is a hassle, not worth the trouble! As interesting as it might be to see what Collins wrote it can't be worth all the hassle when a couple of reflector work lights with halogen bulbs in them would take care of the problem.
Sorry...

I created a Yahoo account, went through all the garbage, told them I didn't want the Yahoo bar installed on my browser or the Yahoo spam emails, then was told I wasn't a member of the zProphoto Wedding forum. Tried to join it, and said it would send an email to my email address with the code to let me join. Never got the email.

If anybody has it, and there's not a copyright problem, I wouldn't mind posting it on my web site, but Yahoo is too stupid to deal with. Also hate the commercials.

There. I'm better now.

Sometimes it takes awhile but you will most likely hear from them.

Yahoo Groups was formerely eGroups. eGroups was a great source for divergent information. But Yahoo bought them & eventually changed the privacy policy. They began reveling user email addresses. I still can't get rid of all the spam this created. Worse than that my email address was my buisness one with my full name spelled out.

I could go on & on about other privacy issues with Yahoo but this is not the forum for this.

I used to love Yahoo, now I can't trust them.

Let me know if you want it emailed..

I didn't view it on line but it's not that new of a idea. I went to a dean collins workshop in the early 80's and most of what he was selling was standardization of work methods. Not that he was bad but he acted like he invented this stuff. The light panel stuff was basicly using 3/4" pvc to build your own frames covered with ripstop nylon or translucent shower curtain material

A few measurements and how to split tubes to make joining clips. Most of it recycled from old Peterson Photographic how to articles.

Just emailed you asking you to email me...

Hi Mike,

After looking at your "The Green Room". I sure like to know what's the set up to get that picture. The link of table top unit is not working. Can you provide the correct link? Also if possoble, please tell us how you shoot the picture. I really like your photos. Thanks.

The booklet had been off his site for a while.
Since there's people whining about Yahoo...

Dean Collins has had the book on his own site for years.

No, it certainly has not.

The URL I gave is his site. The book is right there, as it has been for years. I've been pointing people to it for years. It doesn't move.

And don't top post.

No, it's still there. I think Dean wrote it back in 82, so yeah, it's been around awhile.

And no, Dean did not, nor did he ever claim he invented the stuff. Hollywood and photographers have been using scrims for years. He did, however, produce the Lightform panels that are distributed now by Bogen. Then a few years later other companies made their knock off versions; Calumet, Photoflex, etc. These were designed to be lightweight unlike the big bulky ones used for movies and TV. Dean also helped design the ones that Chimera now produces. These are made of smaller aluminum rods instead of PVC.

There are some pretty wacky designs in Tinker Tubes. And I'm sure your local hardware or plumbing store will love you.

I'll also say again, Dean is still the best person to ever teach the fundimentals and effects of lighting for the portrait and commercial photographer. He never claimed to be great though he had a state of the art studio any commercail photographer would envy, world famous clients and had the greatest names in the photo industry as sposors. If that's not being great, I don't know what is.

As a side note, Dean recently won a battle with cancer. He is doing well and continues to produce more videos for his company http://www.software-cinema.com
