In which category should I fit in? I recently have bought various
lenses, 1 Takumar M42, one 'M', one 'A' lens and one more from
another maker with K mount, but I don't even own any Pentax camera
yet...
Now, please don't be rude

Either preemptive LBA or I guess the buying of lenses sans camera is
LBA in its purest form.
thank's for the honor ;-)

The Takumar 35mm 3,5, the 'A' 28mm 2,8, that refconverter M...just how had I managed that long without them. One simply MUST have them IMHO....Ahh!

Too much!

Started off with manual Minolta (Minolta changed their mount in the move to AF) and then switched to Canon FD (another dead system now with tonnes of cheap and extremely high quality glass around) before moving to Pentax digital. In Minolta, I had 50/1.7 and 28-70/3.5-4.5. In Canon FD, at different times, I had 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 28/2.8, 28/2.0, 100/2.8, 85/1.8, a no brand 80-200mm, A-1, AE-1P and T60. Only one of those Canons broke, necessitating purchase of one of the other ones. How I miss the A-1 and the faster primes - the FD 28/2 is still the most satisfying lens I ever owned.

But I fancied a wider angle, and wanted digital convenience.

I decided to do Pentax only because of the 16-45mm f/4 ED AL. I don't know how things are now, but 18 months ago, there was no equivalent slightly-wider-than-normal zoom at this price point available from any other brand. The Olympus 11-22mm (=22-44mm) is quite a bit dearer, and the f/2.8 zooms from others were bulky professional affairs. So I just waited for a new body (in the shape of the K100D) and bought the zoom at the same time. I have bought and sold a FA 28-70/4 AL mainly on build quality grounds - the lens behaved fine, but just felt flimsy.

I bought the Sigma 24mm 2.8 PKA as a small alternative standard. The performance is surprisingly good, but manual focus is not so easy with modern focusing screens. I am also getting bored of being asked what focal length I am using (for shake reduction) on start up. The DA21 would solve my two problems, save some space but cost me some speed. The Sigma is the size of two pancake lenses back-to-back, so not so big. It is definitely more portable than the 16-45/4! Also, I find that giving the camera+MF lens to people unfamiliar with MF usually results in no photo, and loads of grumbles about how fiddly it is.

I also bought a cheap-as-chips Ricoh 50mm 1.7 but find it a bit disappointing. I can cope with manual focus AND stopped down metering AND the camera asking me for the focal length for SR, but the faff isn't worth the trouble half the time. Very flare prone! It has potential, but I simply haven't managed to exploit it satisfactorily yet.

I'll continue to run my 16-45/4 + 24/2.8 + 50/1.7 for the moment. I just don't take enough snaps to justify the costs of further changes at present. I need to get out more and utilise what I have already, rather than waste time thinking about kit I could have.

But I still really fancy the DA21/3.2 and the forthcoming DA55/1.4, to replace my manual focus lenses. Not more LBA! Maybe if I write to Santa early enough for next Christmas...

I started with these 5 lenses when i bought the camera

Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC... $650
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC... $450
Pentax DA50-200mm F4-5.6... $200
Sigma APO 100-300mm F4 EX DG... $1500
SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.4 Bayonet... $100

then i bought these...
Pentax FA50mm F1.4... $370
Pentax FA35mm F2.0 AL.. $370

and sometime in all of this i aquired these...
Tamron 24mm F2.5 BBAR MULTI C. M42... $80
Yashica Auto Yashikor 28mm F2.8 M42... $35
SMC Takumar 35mm F2.0 M42... $170
Opticam 35mm F2.8 M42... $6
Munchen Hexatar 45mm F2.8 M42... $30
SMC Macro-Takumar 50mm F4 M42... $60
Zenit Jupiter-9 85mm F2.0 M39!!!!!!... $130
Opticam 135mm F2.8 M42... $18

Grand total = $4169 but i just sold a lens for $100 and i didn't include the teleconvertor or other lens related accessories

not as much as MBA, motorcycle buying addiction. I had about 20bikes in the space of 10years. Leave you to do the numbers on that one.

So far this year it has only been a 2 DA* lenses, fa50,fa50,da fisheye, bag and tripod and K10D. I say only because it would be more if some of the new lenses were available.

That is not even the same as one bike! but i'm here for a good time not a long time.

Cheers Neil

Good grief, what a question......

Currently I own six lenses; four primes, and two zooms. I think the most I've owned at one time is maybe seven. My current kit is:

DA 21
FA 43
DA 70
FA 135
DA 16-45
DA 50-200

But in the past I've owned each of the following:

F 28/2.8
FA 28/2.8
FA 50/1.7
FA 50/1.4
FA 100/3.5 Macro
FA 28-105/4-5.6 PZ
FA 28-105/4-5.6 Silver
FA 28-105/3.2-4.5
FA 28-70/4
F 80-200/4.7-5.6
FA 80-320/4.5-5.6
F 17-28/3.5-4.5 Fisheye
FA 20-35/4
DA 18-55/3.5-5.6

I've also had the following bodies (sometimes two at a time):

ZX-5n
*ist-DS
K10D

...and the following flashes:

AF330FTZ
AF360FGZ

What has LBA cost me? It's hard to say. Some of the lenses I bought new, some used. Some sold again for about what I paid for them. Some I took a loss, and some I even made a small profit on.

I probably have more invested in glass now than at any time in the past, though the sale of previous lenses went a long way toward covering the costs of the six I currently own.

Hmmm, I've had it for quite a while and have forgotten what I paid for most of the lenses I no longer have. I may have even forgotten some of the lenses over the years. Here's my best recollection....

Promaster 28-70 f4-5.6 (long gone) $150
Kalimar 135mm f2.8 (long gone, but a great lens) - $30 used
Pentax F 50mm f1.7 (replaced by next lens) - $100 new
Pentax FA 50mm f1.4 (still have) $180 new
Pentax FA 100mm f2.8 macro (still have) $250 used
Pentax FA 28-70 f4 (gave to my dad) $?? I think I traded some stuff for it.
Pentax F 80-200 f4-5.6 (gave to my dad) $150
Pentax FA* 85mm f1.4 (will never part with) $0.0 (free, no charge) brand new
Pentax DA 16-45 f4 (still have) $400
Pentax DA 50-200 (still have) $200
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 (still have) $300

That's all I can remember, but I know I've had more. There was the M 50mm f1.7 that came with my ME Super.

I have to say Pentaxian spent pennies comparing to Nikon and Canon users.

Your question clearly belongs to the latter category.

Between the ones I already have and the ones that are on the way, I would say that I've spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000 since October when I got my first DSLR body. For the specifics on what I have and what is coming, see my profile.

After spending time with my family in the last week and discussing the subject, it is very clear that they just don't understand...

Oh well...
