Camera store sales person discouraged me from getting a 5D

A "spiff" is a bonus paid to a camera salesperson directly by a manufacturer to get them to push a particular camera. Shocking isn't it?

Take a picture, it'll last longer.

Not to dis all camera sales person. But while I was looking at the 5D I overheard a lady asking for a good point & shoot camera as a gift and was handed a Leica D-Lux 3 right away. Fortunately that lady was no fool, she just said "my budget is under $200.00".

Wait for PMA and see what emerges. Probably a new and much improved 5DII/3D/7D. Canon are in a corner. Need something good to bust out. 450D won't do it. Only other options at PMA are 5D replacement and/or new segment altogether. One is almost certain, the other possible. Not long to wait and whatever comes will be much better than the (now v old) 5D.

If we do it right the first time around, how will we sell the upgrade?! ;)
Keep photography wild.

Where is that Sony 'flagship' anyway? And more importantly, will it come in pink?! Lol.

Canon make more margin on products at the end of their lifecycle (when all the components are dirt cheap on account of being old). They could afford to pay a bigger commission on the 5D now than the replacement at launch. Sounds like a salesperson gave decent advice for once.

Canon, yes, but the commissions are paid out of the store's profit margin, not Canons. Spiffs are sometimes split between mfr and retailer, sometimes paid by the mfr entirely. As the mfr suggested retail shrinks, sometimes it shrinks faster or more than the cost.

Your advice has a few flaws in it:

1- Not knowing the specific detailed needs of the OP, its not accuarate to assume all buyers are aiming for the best and latest technologies. Some aim for quality/price/performance ratio, and have budget for the current 5d s price (which is very good), and not willing to shell out for the brand new 5D II price. The best deal is always realized at the end of the product's life cycle.

2- Canon reaction to Nikon latest offerering: It would take at least a year from design to production, so if the camera is to be out in early 2008, it was desgined at least in early 2007, too ealry for Canon to design it in response to Nikon D3,D300. You can argue that they know in advance due to indeustrial espionage or what not, but based on 1D3 III and 1Ds III features, they did not know in advance...

That is the only explanation. There might be other issues at work but all of them stream from the stupidity source.

They have the camera in stock but the sale person told me not to buy
it because full frame have vignette, need bigger and heavy lenses,
etc and there is a new one coming out soon. I thought sales person
just sell sell and sell. First time ever seen this sort of thing
happen.

It happens often, particularly when a store has other equipment it wants to unload, or gets a bigger commission from other manufacturers. His "reasons" are ignorant.

The 5D is about to be replaced...

The rest is horse manure, vignetting comes with the full frame feature (easily fixed) and if you don't shoot "L" you may just end up in he11 =)

Wait 2 months and go for 5D mk II

Sadly, not the first time I have seen this sort of thing - and the 5D seems to get more than its fair share of idiot sales people. I bought mine just over two years ago, soon after it hit the streets, but I had to go further afield than I expected to do so.

I initially went to my local store and asked to have a look at a 5D as they had one in the display cabinet. They refused to take it out of the display or let me touch it on the grounds that "the sort of person that would buy that type of camera wouldn't want anyone else to have handled it first". I asked to see the manager and he repeated the same line! My reply was that I was just the sort of person who would buy that type of camera but I certainly wasn't going to part with more than two and a half grand without having first tried it out to make sure I was comfortable with it. I walked out of the store and caught a train to central London where I bought it slightly cheaper from someone who was interested in selling.

The following day I went back to the local store, 5D in hand, and asked what the largest memory card they had for it was. They showed me a Sandisk - 4GB I think - but I didn't buy it saying that it wasn't the sort of shop I felt comfortable spending money in. I've never been back and, having now moved 120miles away, am extremely unlikely to ever again. ;-)

goodness me, the store staff and manager sound like a bunch of buffaoons...the kind of people who'd refuse to sell rap stars a bmw or a range rover.
Was it an independant store or a high street chain?

as much as I'd love to support our local independant store, i REFUSE to pay £390 for a canon G9 and he wouldn't budge on the price...even though locally and 10 yards away jessops were selling it for £350.

Infact, every single thing in his store is way way way more expensive than the chain stores.. im fully aware that he has to make a living and his overheads etc are a lot more, but im thinking that he is pricing customers out of his store and onto the bigger retailers.

prices on the 5D are pretty competitive right now, not much room in the margin for commision.

I agree with Robert Shelton. Probably a bigger commission on the 40D unless he's stupid. Most people in sales are on a commission.

I have the 30D, 40D and 5D and love them all. the stuff about the 5D is bull. If you want a FF, 5D and don't care to wait until late Jan to see if there's a 5D Mark II, go for the 5D now or wait and if a new 5D is released, the 5D's price will drop more.

I'd trust this forum much more than I'd trust a salesman.

Unfortunately it was an independent. I was actually prepared to pay a bit more for the convenience of it being local and being able to check it out for faults or dust etc. beforehand. Some people just don't deserve to be in business.
