ProShow For MAC

Is there any feature to protect images from copying and ca you put an expiration date on the disc. If so can these features be circumvented by a customer?

I did read the company website and it made no mention of any copy protection so i was asking people who might be working with it. I understand a good hacker may break it if it does have protection, but I am trying to see if there is any kind of protection at all.

Found this quickly on their site:

otoMagico 2 creates leave-behind shows with maximum impact and no worries about stolen images. Share slideshows in their original quality with anyone who has a Macintosh computer – and they don't need FotoMagico to watch it. With older versions you exported your slideshow as a movie, and burned it to a DVD. Movies don’t have the sharpness of your original show. The new version's standalone player displays the same sparkling definition and saturated contrast as the original show, and makes it easy to leave high-quality copies of your portfolio with clients. You can also set an expiration date or a limited number of viewings to prevent unauthorized copying. Do it all with a couple clicks.

this is on page: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/whatsnew/

Looks like you can even limit the number of times it will play. How, I have no idea :)

I had evaluated photomagico and ended up buying photo to movie, but quite honestly I can't remember why - I think it rendered faster. However since then I've not been happy with some limitations like no ability to randomize play order and a fairly clunky interface. They both are worth a download and demo - that's what I did.

ProShow Gold on the PC is still far more advanced, and that's a shame given the market on the mac - I guess iphoto does it for most.

Their website didn't say one way or the other (although if, as they say, they can make Ken Burns jealous, they ought to be able to handle video :-))

This capability would be nice without having to spend a lot on something like Final Cut Express.

Yes, actually iMovie HD 6 (not the new one) is a great slideshow builder, and then you can export it to iDVD and burn your disk. Don't know about copy protection though.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

James,

Your original post mentions two different products (proshow producer and proshow gold). If you were using proshow gold, then I think you'll find similar capability in the product already mentioned above (fotomagico).

However, if you were using Proshow Producer, you will not find a mac alternative as I've searched extensively. My solution was to purchase Vmware Fusion and continue to use Proshow Producer. It works extremely well using this virtual machine software.

The main features missing on all of the mac equivalent packages include:
  • Layers with the ability to change image features over the time duration of the slide
Note that this is also possible with any combination of media (slides or video)
  • Keyframing, allowing complete/precise movement over the time duration of the slide (this includes an unlimited number of simultaneous layers). This is much more sophisticated than just defining a start and finish point.
  • Text motion and effects; much more capable within Producer
  • Layer masking, vignettes; again all can be used over the course of slide duration time.
  • Slide Show branding - you can completely brand the intro/exit and any window frame components.
  • CD Protection - the ability to restrict playback or copy of CD using passwords or a limited number of showings or date restriction.
-- note: there's been a lot of discussion on this thread about protecting DVD's and there are NO slideshow packages that encrypt or restrict copying (this is because the current encryption method used by movie companies requires the purchase of a "key" that is VERY expensive; and besides there are many illegal "rippers" on the internet that have circumvented this protection.)

---- also none of the Mac applications (iphoto, imovie, idvd) have any type of protection capability; at least none that come with ilife '08.

In summary, Proshow Producer is the most feature laden slide show product on the market and if you need the level of capability it provides, it's the only game in town. If however, you simply need to make a high quality slide show with Ken burns effects with simple start-finish placement/zoom and timed music added, the ilife '08 suite will provide it. Also of note is that the iDVD output (using the pro quality setting) produces DVD based slide shows comparable in quality to Proshow Producer (at least when viewed on my 65" HD tv).

Hope this helps in your decision.

regards,
AH.

I still use pro show gold, and have bootcamp on my mac with pro show running.. It will not burn disks properly under parralells.

I can believe how fast it renders my 600 image shows on my mac book pro compared with my older athlon pc.

Craig,

I don't have an issue burning disks using the Vmware Fusion product. I think you'll see Vmware's market share continue to increase over Parallels over the next year as Vmware has been in the virtual market for much longer; we use Vmware in my company extensively in the distributed server space.

AH.

I run ProShow using Boot Camp. Works fine. I am a great fan of Proshow

Shoot lots of pictures, always fill the frame

running parallels and pro show, it will burn the disk, but my dvd player will not recognize it.. It is missing something along the way..I tried to find out why, no help from pro show.
