Well, I just borrowed the E-3 with 12-60mm, and did a studiosession with a model... (I work as an editor on a photomagazine, so luckily I can borrow stuff before deciding to buy or not)

I own a 1D MKII, and after the studiosession I'm convinced,..the E-3 does a very good job in the studio...

So I just ordered the camera with the 12-60mm and the new 36R flash :)

Even though studio/fashion-shots are edited quite a lot, the standard-out-of-the-box image still has to be very good (colors/tone, sharpness etc), and the E-3 raw-files definately are very good!

I use Lightroom to do the raw-part conversions, and in many of the E-3 files, only little adjustments very made,..even if I tried the auto-adjustments,...even WB was close to the real thing...

So rawfiles are definately close to reallife, thats positive :)) Its very easy to enhance/tweak the images,..
Also I shot medium size/quality jpgs,..even they are good and pretty sharp...

Here are a few shots from the session :o))

Merry X-mas (from a happy E-3 owner)..

Merry Christmas

Thanks Bill ;o)

One bad thing though, is changing a complete system,..all those lenses and other stuff I've collected over the years,,.. its gonna take a year to get rid of it, hehe

but I'm really looking forward to getting the E-3,..should have it between x-mas and new year :o)))

Also E-3 is much more handy + more features,.. and lenses and stuff are smaller, lighter than Canon,..at least most of it ;o)

I travel quite a lot too, so being able to dismount the verticalgrip, is just great :)

Also the wireless flash system will be great, since I also do modelshoots on location :o)

merry x-mas and a happy new year to you too

so the question I have is, which one of the two will you use as your main tool? Do you forsee situations where you will be using one over the other, or do you see yourself using one more than the other most of the time, or will you swap :)?

I'm very curious, as I have a Nikon D200 and an Olympus E510. They are both great units, but I tend to use my D200 for sports / action / reportage, and my E510 for studio work (although the D200 is used there too). Great session BTW, especially first image's colours and tone; wonderful.

Oops, seems you posted your answer as I posted my question!! :0)

Hi :o)

The studio is quite large,..the wall is built into the floor (one big curve), which means no edges along wall/floor..

One very big softbox,.. 2 meters x 1,8 meters,.. approx at 800W, f8, 1/125 sec, auto whitebalance, iso 100..

My editor in chief actually uses both E-3 and D200,.. but he's switching towards the E-3, uses that most of the time for different shoots..

I dont really shoot sports etc, so I do not need the very fast 1D MKII,.. and I'm selling that camera :o)

But if I were to do sports (fast-going stuff eg motorsports), I would go for the 1D MKII or MKIII,..or eg D3.. (still E-3 can do actionshots,..just not as fast as the 1D).. For a reporter the size of it is perfect,..not too big, and live view works great for the alternative shots :)

The focusingsystem on the E-3 is just as fast as the others.. and locks on very fast in both dark and light environments..

The weathersealing on the E-3 is very good,..you can poor water all over the camera,..I dont thing a lot of other cameraes would work after that treatment :o)))

At the moment I'm testing the 1Ds MKIII,..its an impressive camera,.. I used it on Canons EOS Safari in kenya too,..but still it requires very good lenses,..and its a heavy combo :(

Yep, the Oly-colors are great,.. its very close to reallife,..and perfect for postprocessing/editing...
actually these colors are better than the Canon-ones...

Thanks Ron,..

Yes, I think so too :o))
So little adjustments are needed in Lightroom,.. I'm impressed with that..

My girlfriend is using the E-500 with standard 14-45 in the studio,..I'm very impressed with that combo too!
Olympus overall is doing well in studio-environment I think..

Hi Jan

Thanks for posting those as its studio + model shoots is what I'm planning to do from the start of the New Year. Looking at the quality of the files and the comments you've made I'll be picking up an E3 in the New Year to pair up with my 35-100.

Cheers

Thank you,..glad you like them ;o))

Studio is my main focus too,..so that where the E-3 had to be very good,..and luckily it is, hehe...

I'm quite sure you will not regret it :o)

Hi Hans

Theres quite a lot of work :o)

On these fashion-shots you edit a lot of stuff, since they have to look very "clean/soft and smooth"...

Still the raw-files are excellent to work with from start... on a lot of these fashionshoots we did, I only applied little soft parts to skin etc... and only little/subtle sharpening, as I already did that in Lightroom :)

I really do not see how they could get any better.

I would imagine the Canon images would be just as good and maybe somewhat different, but could you say better? I would think not.

One thing I have seen is comments elsewhere about Oly getting more of a film look with the new E3. Do you see that in your studio work?

Again ..beautiful wok.

'We all have it, but how do we use it?'

Thanks :o)

basically I would say that a lot of cameraes could "get the job done",.. but some might just require more editing, while others again looks more "spot on".

My 1D MKII images looks good too,..in no way worse, but they need a little more "power up" on different things,..eg. colors, sharpness... they dont reproduce these more natural colors right away..

Details are very good with the Canon too,.. so no, I wouldnt be able to say which camera does best,..guess its also very much a personal preference/choice,.. what you like to work with,..and what you dont...

What I do know, is that the Oly-package is better,..more features, more mp, different functions, size and weight ratio... and lens is extremely good!

But I cant comment on which is best, only on what I prefer :o)

BR and merry x-mas
