Why do you strip EXIF data.

I have noticed that many photos posted no longer have the EXIF data available. Don't you think it is a huge benefit not to strip the data? I find it a great tool being able to see the info. So please don't remove the data.

I never do, couldn't be bothered. I like to refer to the EXIF data on occasion as well...

I think a lot of people might do it inadvertently but using Photoshop's Save for the Web feature.

PhotoShop be such a high powered tool, it should know better, as EXIF is not a hindrance, it is a tool if used properly to learn. I use Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for my post processing and so far it hasn't removed any EXIF info that I know of.

It ain't deliberate, it just disappears man, certainly with the level of PP software I can afford such as Elements.

I personally use GIMP, there are checkboxs for thumbnail and exif data in the JPEG export dialogue, simple and straightforward, it disappears when i wish.

I think you may have misunderstood, when i save JPEGs at web resolutions the exif data starts to make a larger impact on file size than it does for the originals, if i strip the exif(uncheck the checkbox in GIMP's JPEG save dialogue) and find that the preview filesize is much better than it was before i'll leave exif out.

I just let the flickr host site do the resizing. I don't recall any question or checkbox letting me choose to keep the exif data.

I 'll try to do it myself using paintshop pro and seei f i can keep it by sending in the already resized image to Flickr

I suspect that most folks are using processes that default to stripping it out, i.e. not a deliberate choice

Lightroom strips my TIFF-exports of their exif everytime. Still, I have the right checkboxes marked.

Sorry for the inconvinience, but I promise you it´s my problem too ;)

Can´t get enough? Check out my galleries at http://www.dovholt.com/photo/

flickr downsamples, sharpens and strips exif for you, it displays it on site if you have such preferences set though.

What version of Elements do you have? My version 5.0 retains the EXIF data after resizing and upload.

I am just one of those purists that like to know the mechanics of a photo. Like I said I use a program to PP then resize using the Microsoft free resize power toy at it make s the file the correct size for web leaving EXIF intact.

Well, for those that don't have to worry about file upload sized, (like myself), the Save As... function will save without stripping the EXIF info.

Some programs do not retain the data, so it is not always the user who "strips" the exif.

Secondly, some people do not want their exif data made available as a matter of privacy concerns.

I don't think there is anything in my EXIF that results in a privacy issue. If you are afraid of owner information, must graphics programs allow you to edit this section as it doesn't exist unless you put it there. So what is the privacy issue?

Don't blame Photoshop. Photoshop lets the users choose between retaining and removing the exif data. Don't you think users should have the ability to remove EXIF data if that is what they want?

Ah, but does it allow you to remove the EXIF data if and when you want to for reasons of privacy?

I PP and save a web version from the same program, and do some sharpening when needed, using save copy as. I can't use the ms powertoy on linux but if it were available to me i almost certainly wouldn't bother, does it give you fine grained control over JPEG DCT and subsampling?

The most recent version of Photoshop finally made it an option to retain the data in Save for Web (now called "Save for Web & Devices"), at least I think it was my most recent version that did this. The thing is that using this setting was such a quick and efficient way of shrinking file sizes (for everyone else's benefit) that I would use it and then be extra sure to list pertinent data along with any pictures I posted.
