Maybe some of Sandro's D3 shots can shed some light on your dilemma. Check this link: http://www.stunningnikon.com/challenge/?fromlanding=true

Honestly I'm not impressed with the photographs from the Nikon website. I'm more impressed with the photographs taken by the d3 that are posted on this forum--and yes, they are freakin' beautiful--and show the true potential of the D3.Maybe some of Sandro's D3 shots can shed some light on your dilemma.

Heck, the photos on the Nikon website could have been shot with a
Canon for all we know.
There are many good reasons to stop doing astronomy photography with a telescope and book a flight in space instead... EVERYTHING can be "better", but D3 is fantastic. There are good reasons to own D3 such as speed, flexibility, wide range of lenses, etc. But sharpness is not one of those reasons.

Mack,
Yes you did the right thing by cancelling. If you are really
interested in sharpness you need to get a medium format camera with
digital back. For only $1-2K more than a D3 body, you could have
purchased a used medium format digital system that will blow any 12mp
camera away on sharpness. Even the lowly Mamiya ZD will do this
with its 22mp and no AA filter. In my case I purchased the
Hasselblad H1 system with the now obsolete Kodak Professional 16mp
back, total cost including lens and extra 120/220 back, extra
batteries: $7000. The sharpness and overall image quality makes my
D2X look like a cheap P&S. Now I can comfortably print at 24x36 and
larger sizes. Removing the AA filter, as done in most MF backs, is
like taking off a pair of foggy glasses. Unbelievable sharpness
emerges. If you really want to experience sharp pictures and print
in the 30x50 size and larger (like Peter Lik), you should purchase
one of the used 39mp backs that are now coming on the market as
photographers upgrade to the newer, faster 39mp backs that appeared
earlier this year (Leaf, Phase, Hasselblad).
There are good reasons to own D3 such as speed, flexibility, wide
range of lenses, etc. But sharpness is not one of those reasons.

I've shot with my D2Xs (17-55 f/2.8 DX) on multiple occasions in pouring rain for hours with no problem. I suspect Canon's 1D cameras would do fine, as well.away because a few rain drops either. Conversely I would not shoot in
pouring rain a 1D without adequate additional protection.
