So who CAN I trust to buy from online?

Just read arthur's post regarding RegOnline and them selling your credit card #, as well as having read a few "If it's too low (a price) than it's too good to be true" posts about websites saying they're out of stock of what you order if you're not receptive to their additional sales pushes.

Other "Yikes" include the possibility of getting damaged, used, previously returned equipment, or Asian versions that don't have the correct cables, etc for the States.

What I haven't found here is a comprehensive list of very much trusted sites to purchase from that don't **** the consumer price wise. Ritz seems to be a favorite, but I have to assume everyone that shops there must drive Porsches and Mercedes.
I drive a Hyundai.

I'm looking to order online, hassle and pressure free, securely, with fast shipping, and from a dealer receptive to me sending it back if there's a blown pixel in the middles of the LCD, etc.

I've had good experience buying from Cameta Camera, never disappointed in their shipping or pricing.

You get what you pay for.

You asked who was trustworthy. The answer is B&H. You want super cheap AND trustworthy, online? Forget it. You want genuine equipment at a good price from a reputable merchant? Go with B&H (or Adorama or Penn Camera). Otherwise, you are taking your chances.

Look into Beach Camera....they're usually the lowest among the most reputable.....

I think most here will agree (in no specific order)

-B&H ( relatively expensive)

-Buydig / Beach Camera (same company, usually best prices around, quick shipping, but restocking fee and sometimes will ask for fax copy of credit cards and ID for expensive purchases)
-NewEgg (good prices, super quick shipping)
-Penn camera (good e-mail communication on inquiries)

-Cameta camera (good prices, quick shipping, sometimes will ask for you to call to confirm online order)

You can't go wrong with any of the above.

This list isn't limitative but they are the ones I myself had great experience with.

Yeah, I did look at beach, Hank. This is for a Canon TX1, and B&H has it for $499.00 (the list price last year) and Beach, second on the "trustworthy list" has it for 50 bucks less.

Hey, when you're talking about something under five hundred bucks, + or - 10% usually means a good accessory, extra card, battery, etc. for the same price.

Some of those in the "Ok" list are great(like Adorama), and some are sister companies to the ones in the "Bad" list.

I have used B+H, Adorama, Beach Camera and Cameta Camera with absolutely no problems
 
I'm surprised Amazon is a "sometimes". I've never bought from them. I always thought they were basically a collection of other merchants or something.

yes and no.

they sometimes sell 'on their own' and then its quite trustable. you can even cancel the order in a certain time after you place it.

otoh, when they reference sell, its not always the best situation. you can't stop the order once places, you have to talk to the vendor to fix issues (not amazon) and you have to hope the vendor CARES enough to deal with you after they have your money. that's the 'sometimes' part that gives me reason to pause.

another example: sometimes the item you are looking for is offered by a very sleazy seller. I have been 'pinging' the amazon site to closely watch the e510 price (for example). sometimes its on sale for $495 body only. refresh your browser and it comes up $495 for body+lens! refresh again and its $700 for body+lens. its crazy! depends on how the database 'likes' you it seems ;)

one vendor that came up didn't have a good rep at all. I have a resellerratings firefox extension and so I could easily check their rating. it was below 1! yet amazon listed them as a 'trusted' seller. hardly..

so you have to be careful with amazon. there's amazon the real seller and amazon the front man for really 'iffy' sellers. and I'm not even talking used - just 'new' gear.

but again, to be clear, if it says 'ships and sold by amazon' then its much more trustable.

A friend was pleased w/Abes of Maine - I haven't tried them yet.

I've had good luck w/B&H & Ritz (stores).
