Problem with RAW Image Conversion on Mac

Just so you'll know, I just got a G2 a few days ago. It's my first digital camera, but I am a seasoned computer user. I'm running all the latest Canon software and also Photoshop 6 under Mac OS 9 on a G3 400. Currently, I have been connecting my camera directly to the computer via USB, although I do have a card reader. (I haven't opened it yet because I was debating whether I would actually really need it...)

I'm having a terrible time trying to download and convert RAW files. First of all, when I attempt to convert RAW files in the Image Browser program (v. 2.2), I get an error message stating that the RAW files created by my camera are not compatible with that version of Image Browser. How can that be??!

So, I decided to try using the PS Plug-in (v. 4.3). It doesn't work either!! The images showed up as questions marks, and when I tried to transfer a file, it claimed there wasn't enough disk space -- but there are several hundred free MBs on that particular drive, and I was only trying to transfer one file!!

So, as a last ditch effort, I tried the RAW Image Converter (v. 2). When I tried to convert an image, I got an ambiguous error stating simply that there was an error saving the file and nothing happened.

Is there some advantage to using a card reader rather than a direct connection? Is there something else I should try? Am I doing something wrong? Am I just jinxed?

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thanks!!

It's me again. Nobody has responded to my plea for help yet, but I thought I'd give an update and some additional info.

First of all, I tried the card reader, but I'm still having the same problems.

Also, when I try saving the file rather than transferring it using the Photoshop Plugin, I get an error message that says 'an unsupported file format was included in the save file' and so it doesn't save the file. This makes no sense to me.

Even with the card reader, when I try to convert and save using the RAW image converter, all I get is the same 'error saving image' message that I got before.

Again any advice or assistance anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

I think you have to import the files off the card reader to your harddrive before you can convert the images. I always use the camera connection because I don't want to have to remove my 1G microdrive everytime. Check the instructions in the manual. If all else fails, try posting in the Mac forum.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for responding, Doug.

I did copy the files to my hard drive firs, and I did check the manual. (The manual provided very little info.)

Maybe I should try the Mac forum too. Originally, I thought that since this problem was specific to Canon software, I should post here.

I also have a Mac and using the same version of Raw Image Converter as you with no problems. Here's how I import and convert my raw images.

1. Make sure the images are in a folder located on your hard drive.
2. Start Raw Image Converter.
3. Click on
4. Select folder where images are located

5. Click on the images you wish to add/shift click if you want to import multiple images
6. click on
7. Image files should show with raw image converter window
8. click on

9. Raw image converter should start to process raw images and save to same folder where raw images are stored or another folder that you may have selected.

Thats all there is to it.

Hope this helps.

I did get the latest Plug-in from the Canon site, and I did put a copy in the Plug-ins folder.

I was finally able to use the Image Browser to convert files copied to the hard drive from my card reader, so at least I do have a way to convert my RAW files now.
One other thought. did you upgrade to the new RAW converter from
the Canon site?

If you did, you need to put a copy of the Camera plugin (found in
the Canon Utility folder) into the plugins folder in photoshop.

You also may want to try to increase your memory in photoshop or
reinstall the software.
