I'm wanting to take some outdoors shots of all the ice we have. Like on the trees fences and such. No sun at all and all overcast. Any tips as how to capture this with a D40X and 18-55 or 55-200? I also have the SB-600 flash. I'm new to this and have soooo very much to learn. For every good picture I take I delete 10!

Thanks for any tips on where to start with this or photos to share. Would appreciate seeing other photos of this type.
I've been out but have deleted all as they just aren't coming out at all!

Try all the different settings, like 'sunset, beach, sport, back-light', and see what works best. Try flash also. Just ordered my d40x yesterday - should have it by Friday. But, won't be able to try your shots as I'm here in sunny So.CAL! Bart

Hi: It's a bit hard to recommend anything without sample shots. Do you have the 55-200 vr lens? If not, then you may need to brace the camera for those overcast shots since it will call for slow shutter speeds...you may also want to try a higher ISO such as 800 or 1600.

Everything points to blurry pictures because of the poor light...try the above settings and let us know if it improves things.

Hi Brenda,

I took these pictures in the morning two days ago here in Colorado just after a snowfall.

This was my first time shooting in snow also. I used matrix metering for most pictures that day, you really have to try different settings (with reasoning) to see what suits your likes and needs at the time and for the look you want.

All pictures shot in raw and post processed in Capture NX.
