In Canada, what some people do is enroll in a college or university night course (Photoshop or any other course). They get a student card. With the student card you get big discounts on software at the schools bookstore. PS6 sells for around $1,000(?) Cdn. With the student discount you can probably get it for $350-400? Not sure.

I also didn't want to spend a huge amount, although I did want Photoshop. Based on many reviews and commentary from others, I chose Photoshop Elements. It has proven to be a very solid package, with at least 80-90% of the full-blown Photoshop (probably 100% of everything that I'll every possibly use), plus many helps and "walk-throughs". Most (all?) Photoshop filters, etc. work with it. Most of the hints given in forums and tutorials are also applicable. And the best part is you can get it for $99 (US), with a possible rebate from Adobe of $30. Actually pretty cheap for the power and usefulness and support of user groups.

When I looked into it, PS 7 was $600 US retail, but with education discount was $300 US, which makes it a whole lot more accessible to me.

I dunno about the UK though.

I purchased an old Phtoshop version on Ebay for 50 $ - it was version 2.5 for MacIntosh. I then called Adobe, and upgraded it to version 6.0 for 150 $. I called them beforehand to make sure that this is allowed.

Three ways:

1) Buy the full version. It's pricey, and it rids you of all the liabilities, as described below.

2) If you're in college/university, use your student card and get a discount on the full version. WARNING: If you use the educational full version on projects that make you profits, you're [swearing] dead!! EDUCATIONAL VERSIONS CANNOT BE USED IN A FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATION.

3) Download illegal. You'll need broadband, and you can't d/l it in rush-hour net traffic (because it's too slow). Also, if Adobe finds out you're using a pirated copy, the company can sue you and win, and you'll lose more than the price of the legit copy.

Just got is at this shop for $79 - the same $30 rebate can be applied:

I got the tip about this site from a person on this forum. They ship fast and cheap.

What are the differences between PhotoShop and PhotoElement? They seems like the same for me except for the bucks. Can anyone tell me which one should I buy and what I can I do with each of them?

Try The Gimp instead, costs nothing but the download:

If you must use Windows, there's a port, but I only run under Linux
myself.

If you want to spend less cash with most of the functionality of Photoshop, think about PaintShopPro7. In the UK, it is 10% of the price of Photoshop on amazon.co.uk.

Companies don't continue to sell old versions of software, because it costs nothing to destroy inventory (they are selling you intellectual property, not a CD-ROM). I'm not really sure what the legal situation is on second hand software in the UK. I'm guessing it is illegal, so if you really wanted to go down this road, you may a well steal a new version.

PPS You can download a trial version of PSP7 from jasc.com.

Neil

This is just a bit an ethical question, and isn't meant to criticise anyone in particular, but here we go. Which of the following is morally acceptable:

1. Someone in a well paid job enrols in an hour-a-week course to get a cheap version of Photoshop, thus depriving Adobe of $500 of revenue on their intellectual property.

2. Someone in a well paid job downloads a pirate copy of Photoshop from the internet, thus depriving Adobe of $700 of revenue on their intellectual property.

Now I know one is legal and one is illegal, but I would argue that these are morally identical actions, and it is inconsistent to endorse one and not the other. Does anyone agree/disagree?

Ethically, with regards to 2nd instance, I guess it is unethical as well as illegal. I am not sure I agree with you about the 1st instance. I don't see what is wrong with enrolling in a night class and as a byproduct taking advantage of a student discount.

Adobe disagrees. In the first case, Adobe is not being deprived of anything. They sell the academic version fully expecting students to buy it. If the hour a week class qualifies for their discount, what's wrong with that?

Lovely.

Thanks to folks like you---I was part of the reduction in force at Adobe.

I love to visit these forums for tips on my canon, but this really offends and upsets me to read this.

I'm even too angry to address this further...

Excellent Choice! You can upgrade to 7.0 from Elements. I believe you even get $100 off the full version price when you do, so you are not out any money.
Thanks to all who replied.

I will get a copy of Photoshop Elements (legitimately!) and see how
I do with that.

Can I upgrade to full Photoshop at a later date if I want to?
