This was taken with my Panny FZ15. I thought the background was awesome for this kind of shot but unfortunately the front of the car is dark! This was taken at night and I had no other light source. I hate using my onboard flash. It makes the pic so harsh.
Please can someone please do something to this pic to brighten the front end?

Btw, I have no retouching software. Is there any freeware?

Hi

It is easy to brighten the front of the car but the Panny's are notorious for noise, especially at night etc.

I lightened the front end but the noise was totally unacceptable.....

I am sure others may give it a go but personally I would be a little disappointed because you have a great shot but where the noise may spoil the front end when made lighter......

I would however like to see if anyone has a solution to the problem where the image can be enhanced and the noise removed.

Best Wishes

Same here. If you have the chance to retake the shot, a fill flash would work wonders for the front of the car. Drop the ISO down to 100 as well.

Still happy with the K10d (in spite of the pixel peepers)

I used the Fill Light in ACR and then ran it through Noise Ninja a couple of times.
It still didn't take it all out, but it removed most of it.

Don’t know if I saved it, but here are a couple of tries with Photoshop CS3…

Beemer1 – Layer mask to lighten front end, Nik Define 2.0 to remove noise from masked area, Color Efex 3.0 filters (Pro Contrast, Graduated Neutral Density, Reflector Effects, Tonal Contrast) to bring out front end detail, more Define to remove noise generated by filters.
Beemer-Lucis – Applied Lucis to aforementioned version just for grins.

Without making it look terrible, you have to find an acceptance level of what you can live with. I lightened up the front end and like others the noise was terrible. I ran noise ninja at an acceptable level and created a mask so the filter wouldn't ruin the rest of the image.

Well done, kbalaz.

Ray, of course owns this forum when it come to any retouching on cars and other types of images, but here is a quicky retouch of mine. Because of the color cast of the image, I was not sure of what the true color of the car was. You're sort of screwed in the front end dark area of the car with the noise issue. Having a FZ30 can sympathize, however, had you tried using a DSLR you would have a difficult time of getting any kind of a picture under the circumstances.

The color cast is an important part of the feel of the image. It shouldn't be corrected in my opinion as this makes it worse. The image was shot at night and the color cast gives it that feel with the incandescent lights.

Curves and layer blending in color dodge and screen modes to lighten; painted on a separate layer in color mode to match the body color, chrome, etc; inverse sharpen for contrast; a touch of Lucas for definition; noise removal; edge sharpen.

Looks great!
Is there a tutorial on how to do that?

I used a little chrome and paint off the net and blended

Butch

Hi Butch

I think that is a great job...

Good idea to blend as you have done as there was no way to recover the original...

Looks good to me - I would be happy with that!!

Best wishes
