**Weekly Sports Thread 12/01/2007-12/08/2007**

Well sorta strobed. I used 2 Vivitar 285HV flashes in the balcony set to 1/2 power bounced off a white reflector. Had them gelled for 3800 as that is what white balance is with the lights in the gym. Had the flash heads angeled 45 degrees and a large white card, 2 8.5x11 sheets of card stock taped together. I liked the results so much better than shooting at 3200 without flash I ordered a alien bee 800 and will see if I get good results with one bounced from almost behind the basket. May need to get another but will give one a try first. I'll do anything to get to use my 70-200L rather than a prime ;-)

Shooting 1DMK2, 70-200L 2.8 at 800-1000 ISO and 1/250-1/320 shutter speed. Hope I can get down to 400 ISO 1/250 @ 4.0 for a little more DOF with the B-800.

See what you think. This was a freshman game. Had to try this setup out before I shot a varsity game.

I think on some of the shots under the basket I run into the focus limit 1.5m on the zoom, like the next 2.. Maybe I can have the school move the wall back another foot ;-)

Hi Ian, glad your back. I also felt the 85 was to short at times but also to long so I have decided to get a Strobe (or 2) and shoot with my 70-200L 2.8, I really like that better than a prime. There are a lot of sport shooters that use the 100 and quality as AF wise I think they are very similar. I really don't see a whole lot of difference looking thru my 70-200 set at 85 or 100.

with my new blue dot MkIII with 1.1.3 and my 100 f/2 lens at f/2 and got great results, 83% in-focus. See the link below for the details. My 2nd post under my initial post has nine sample images from the game. This lens works well on a 1.3x body from the floor, shooting in portrait orientation. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I'm not sure about the extra 15mm being enough either. I'll have to bring my 135 f/2 and try that. I think it might be too long, but I'll know more tonight as I have a Women's game to shoot. I do use my 70-200 for shots outside of the key, coaches coaching and the like, but I'm forced to shoot at iso 3200 and I'm not too crazy about the results. I may have to look into strobes for next year.

Thanks for your reply,

Ian

Thanks for the good info, Bryan. How did the mkiii work outdoors?

I'm going to try my 135mm f/2 tonight at the women's game and see if that isn't too long. If it is I may sell my 85mm and get a 100mm.

Thanks, Daniel. That last one just kinda stood out to me. It was taken at the end of a very muddy game. I was leaving the game and saw the gear on the ground and decided to shoot it. When I got home it and saw it on screen it really stood out to me.

Thanks for looking.

depending on the sport, the lens and the subject matter. I think that's great. I think alot has to do with the AF sensitivity setting you choose, whether it be the "standard" setting, the "slow" settings or the "fast" settings. It depends on the sport, too. For indoor basketball, because of the quick passing and quick jump shots, I found that my results increased dramatically when I used the "fastest" setting for AF sensitivity. For football, standard is fine. For baseball, probably one of the slower settings would be best, as you are not bouncing your camera around tracking a ball being passed around. In baseball, you are prefocusing on the batter, the pitcher, the base stealer, the infielder...hoping the hit ball goes to him for a fielding shot, etc.

Mike :) . I may be going the route of strobes down the line for the gym I shoot in. I'll have to see when I can afford it :( .

Thanks Ian. I really dislike shooting with primes and high ISO for sports. We will see how the B-800 preforms. I may have to get a second one. Since my wife decided to go back to college I saved 10% on the light with student discount.

Thanks Mark. I asked the AD, coach and the kids. Since I've been shooting there 6 years they pretty much let me do what i want but once set up I always ask if it is bothering them. They always say they never see the flash. Since I'm bouncing it I doubt they ever notice it. Even with flash for football none of the kids ever said it bothers them, and I ask all the time. I just got my AB-800 so I will be giving that a try Tuesday at the boy's Varsity Basketball game.
