--If the CompUSA store in my neighborhood is characteristic, I'm not surprised that they're closing their doors. The service was terrible. They had 2 or 3 salesmen who were knowledgeable who were overworked and grumpy because of it, and the rest of the employees were totally without sales skills, expertise or interest. I guess this is what comes of niggardly policies on salary structure.

The worst customer service/retail sales I've ever had to suffer through. Going into the Emeryville, CA CompUSA was like going to the dentist.

The astonishingly incompetent checkout experience alone justifies their closure.

I got this camera here..
I got that camera there...
Hey, I've got another one over there...
Look! I've got lenses too, see how long my list is?
And look at all this other stuff I've got!
Bet I've got more stuff than you!

I feel bad for the guy whose going to have to drive an additional 40 miles, but the stores were absolute awful. I remember trying to buy a card reader in one of them, and NO one knew what it was, even though they had a few in the window... :(

CompUSa, a bankrupted company bought a few years ago, by mexican tycoon Carlos Slim. Slim, now a man of incredible wealth only comparable to the likes of Bill Gates (Forbes), bought Telmex, (the mexican state owned telephone company) for peanuts, under the giganticly corrupted administration of president Salinas.

He was then a rich mexican entrepreneur that didn't do it even in Forbes 500. A decade later, He was the richest latin-american. 5 years later, he became (briefly) the richest man of the world (in a country, where 50% of the entire population live under the poverty line). We mexicans enjoy one of the world's most expensive telephone and cell-phone services.

Well, now this new CompUSA bankruptcy, shows, he is not as skilled as a bussiness man but just one lucky son of Juarez.

Circuit City is a pretty bad electronics retailer as well...I wonder if they will go the way of CompUSA.

The funny thing was, 10 years ago, I looked forward to seeing the weekly compusa ads and specials. I guess the key word is "10 years ago"

Funny, I purchased an item from them last week but it was too big for what I needed. I knew I was going to return it.

As soon as I saw this thread, I jumped in my car and hurried up there to take it back.

I'm not sure they would take returns in a week or so. Who knows.

But thanks for the heads up.

It was sad the day CompUSA bought the Good Guys and closed all of those stores, I had several friends that lost jobs due to that little ordeal. Now to see them close is kinda poetic, but I still don't like to see people lose their jobs right before Christmas. Bad customer service was a trademard of that company, heck I think it was one of the rules in the employee handbook. Oh well, with them closing it just opens that many more doors for other people doing the same thing with better customer service.

I feel for the people losing their jobs, but that chain was really bad.

I stopped buying there long time ago, thay always had what I wanted out of stock, even though I knew they had it, customer service was the worst.

One time it took three salesman to find out was firewire card was, the first two had no clue what it was.

in the U.S. but I always enjoyed visiting CompUSA to see stuff, and try stuff, when I visited the U.S. Some places just don't have any other computer store where you can see stuff.

all the stores using their own rebates, should go out of buisness.
i would think that everyone should be getting fed up with these
scames.it was bad enough with manufacturers, now a good portion
of the retaile stores try the rebate scame.

Last year when I heard that CompUSA was closing half their stores I figured the one close to me was going to close. I would go in and the store always seemed empty. I was surprised when it was not on the list.

CompUSA then announced they were going to spend a bunch of money restructuring their stores. Well, they should have spent the money actually finding a reason to keep their stores open. CompUSA really offered nothing special, you could buy just about anything they sold at other stores. They did not look to innovate, like getting rid of mail-in rebates, or offering a better return policy. They did not step up their in store knowledge. Their displays and hands on areas were crowded and not very useful. The inventory in the stores was nothing special, unless you liked paying $40 for a $10-15 USB cable.

They had a year to figure out how to make their stores relevant and useful, but they pretty much did business as usual. I am sorry for the folks losing their jobs, it is a ashame when management fails to properly manage and people lose their jobs.
