I've noticed over the past couple of months that ads loading and reloading are really slowing down the overall site.

It is not uncommon to wait 15 seconds for an ad to load halting the operation of a page on this site. I have at least 5Mbps cable internet and keep my computer virus and spyware free.

You may say it's not an issue since this site is free, but when I get into slow times like I mentioned, I often go to a different site and come back later. Other free sites don't have this trouble of slow page loads. Plus when I tried to post this post an hour ago, the forum seemed to crash or the server had to reset!

Maybe I should just find a plug-in that removes ads from my browser, though I don't know if that would reduce page loading times or not, or just frequent faster sites more. I'd be concerned about this if I were amazon. ;)

And slowing it tremendously. I wrote the administrators... no reply, just as there has never been a reply to any message I've ever sent.

Here's a tip that seems to work: When you see the "ad text" in the status bar, e.g. "Waiting for ad.doubleclick.net" or "ad.amazon.com" or whatever... click Refresh. Seems to bypass something (maybe loading old ads?) and gets right to the page.

If you are using IE, it is easy to stop the ad's- and there is no slowdown in loading from ad's.

Add
.doubleclick.com .doubleclick.net
.doubleclick.ne.jp doubleclick.co.uk

to the restricted zone sites and the ad's should go away. You may have to tweak your secuurity setting/privacy settings.

(dump IE if you use it. its the worst browser out there, in terms
of security and does not support 'extensions' like firefox does)
The security issue is debatable (depends on who you talk to as to which is better). I googled for Firefox and security and got 84,000,000 hits - they were not hits of web sites saying firefox has no security issues.
IE uses "add ons" which are "extensions" by another name.

I have used both and went back to IE because it worked better for me.

The secureness of any software is affected by the diligence of the vendor AND the user.

no more ads, speed is awesome! Thanks a bunch! More people should know about that fix! :)

Of late, the site is definitely much slower overall.

A few times in past couple of weeks I have had a message box appear saying that "there are some scripts running on this page that are slowing down your browser - do you want to close them?" (or words to that effect) so when I clicked YES - all ads disappeared and the site ran much faster.

I use Avant Browser (have done for several years) and it's fine. Firefox is useless for me as too many problems on websites - for example, on a forum I run, those using Firefox cannot access the facility to insert images, links typed in messages do not work (I have to edit them to make them active - same applies to anyone using Linux too). Yesterday, wanted to download, on friend's computer, drivers to update their HP laser printer - impossible to get anything to work for downloading with Firefox, worked fine in their "other" (normally unused) browser - IE6.

So, whilst some may swear by Firefox, I swear at it :-) (And yes I do know about getting add-ins but that's just more hassle to avoid imho)

sites that are THAT broke with the fox are, well, broken by design.

web serving should NOT be rocket science.

I just don't understand why 'webmasters' write such platform-DEPENDANT code. boggle! it just doesn't have to be that way, but sadly, it seems that 'webmasters' just aren't very good, most times.

Without quoting (and by adding a new subject line), we don't know
which fix you're happy with. Thanks.
I always "reply" to the post I am making a comment to. There are many people on here who make a reply to any post, not necessarily the message they had on their screen when they hit "reply".

Plus I used "threaded view", so sorry if you're using "flat view". :)

And the recommendations when you make a reply tell you to change your subject line to reflect what your message is about. I often, and many others too, will start the message in the subject line and continue it in the body of the message. That makes it far easier to pick and choose which messages to read in a "threaded view". You go into some forums that NEVER change the subject line and I see all replies with RE: subject and I think "ugh" because I have no idea what the people are replying with unless I read each message.

I find "flat view" to be unorganized and takes a lot of scrolling. Plus it's difficult to see who is replying to which posts.

Ah, so no one using flat view knows what you're talking about. Happy to get that cleared up, yes.

I guess I could switch to Threaded View just to find out the answer to my question... but since you don't want to impart it in this message, either, I guess communication isn't your goal.

So I'll remain flat :-)

Off topic

Appreciate the information regarding Avant, however, not being familiar with that browser had to Google it. If I understand the information correctly, Avant is software "wrapped around" Internet Explorer to add some features. In the words of the developer, "Avant is as secure as Internet Explorer".

Please don't misunderstand, I'm not criticizing your choice or starting a war, just looking for information as I haven't been happy with IE for a long time and lately find Firefox working very slowly also, which I presume is from code bloat. What would make Avant any better than IE, which, if its arguably not less secure than Firefox, is certainly more of a target?

Although in effect based on IE, AB has many features that IE does not have (including the latest somewhat disliked IE7). and is at least as fast as Firefox when that runs at its best. It is relatively easy to configure to suit anyone's preferences, with a fairly large Options menu and also gives access to all the IE Internet Options too, all without going outside the programme.

Everyone has their own preferences but from my standpoint, having used it for several years (since it first appeared) it works fine - no hassle, which alone is worth using it compared to other offerings. I ran Firefox for a time but gradually became fed-up with the inbuilt problems (some I mentioned previously).

The thing is, you can try it out - and remember to use the TOOLS menu and Options to configure in the way you prefer. There are several choices of Skins and you can easily change the whole appearance and which features (toolbars, etc.) you find most useful for quick access - a great benefit if working online and not constantly having to access menu items - all quick access things (like Bookmarks, etc.) can be via quick icons, so taking a little time to ensure is as you require pays dividends in speed of operation. The ability to Translate pages from/to several lamguages is also very useful - well, is to me.

If you want to try latest version - it is regularly updated - has its own forum - so author really is doing his best to relate to requirements of users. There is also the offer for online storage of profiles and suchlike. It is not just a browser, with such features which seem to increase on a regular basis.

you might be in the minority unfortunately. It's important to reply to the proper message.

If you're replying to me... which is impossible to know in Flat View without quoting... then I agree.

Quoting is equally valuable in either view... but that's just my view. As I writer, I try not to have my words lost on any portion of an audience. In the case of this forum, that means quoting so that it's easy to follow either threaded or flat.

I'm not trying to convert you, just pointing out how things appear for those of us living in a flat world.

I'm definitely in the minority in almost any area of life we're discussing. LOL
