Will anyone join me in shouting to Sony to create a successor to the R1.

Same general spec, but with CCD stabiliser, better macro capability and slightly longer reach on the lens.

I hazard a guess that the R1 is the last of it's kind, as a successor would steal sales of A700 along with other D-SLR.

However, if enough of us wanted the product, surely Sony would have to take notice as the profits would be huge.

I know this doesn't really invite questions, but if we all subscribe, maybe someone at Sony will take note and be brave enough to endorse an upgrade of a legend.
R1 rules!!
C'mon folks - lets see who cares.....

an R type with a serious long lens for birds or whatever if one could have the same quality IQ as my R1...I quess that would be a bit limiting for the masses? Heck make make two models an Rxwide and an Rx tele...I'll get both...Dream on,Bob actually I may have sell my mint R1 for a 400 prime for my dslr..

Dear Sony,

Please discontinue the H Series and renew the R series with the following specs:

Bionz II Processor
Face 3.0 Detection, Smile 1.0 Detection, Bare Butt (Mooning) 1.0 Detection
18x Optical Zoom
Large Sensor
6 pictures / second burst mode
Video Mode
14mp Resolution
Choice of RAW, JPG SUPER FINE, JPG FINE, JPG COMPRESSED, AVI, MPG, YOUTUBE
GPS Picture Stamping
Wireless Transfer to Home Networks
Wireless Remote that works from front or back
Detachable T-Series Slim Camera with 4gb memory transferrable to R2 when docked

And lastly,

The ability to program your camera ahead of time from a pc so that when you take pictures in a certain folder, it automatically provides a prefix to the numbering - such as "wedding" or "Ren Fest"

Please ensure the image quality to be the highest quality of any camera ever produced by Sony and that it is a true adfancement of the R1.

Thanks,
Toby

these discussions number in maybe the scores, going back a year and half.

There are many that want an R2....extremely unlikely its coming, Sony has switched to interchangeable lens systems so they can sell, well, lenses.

I don't mind adding my name and wants to another list though.

1. Please don't change the lens.
2. Please don't add more pixels.
3. Please leave the noise reduction decisions to us
4. Please greatly improve focus speed and reliability
5. Please make the exposure bracket completely configurable i.e. 4 stops
6. Please return the custom white balance to a one push system (like F series)
7. Please improve the size of the RAW files, jpeg shouldn't be mandatory
8. Please increase shoot speed to 5 fps
9. Add IS on the sensor
10. Make wireless connectivity an option, make wireless flash control an option

Lastly, improve high ISO only by increasing the size of the photosites, not through processing. Thats a big please, please.

thanks
dave

ps, make an R2-L with a long lens like a 36-200 equiv and charge an arm and a leg for it...I'll buy that too.

Like lots of you, I've been hoping for an upgrade to the R1 (which I have), and David sums up the desired changes perfectly. But looking at the list, it occurs to me that, really, the A700 with the right lens comes closest to that upgrade. And the A700 is not that great a jump in dollars, when you add in inflation and consider what the R1 cost when it was new. In its design the R1 did imitate a DSLR, which made it easier for Sony to decide that it was redundant once they went into actual DSLR production.

The non-DSLR camera that would justify an upgrade would be the V3. Given what it achieved with the V3, Sony is better positioned to re-invent the rangefinder ideal, in affordable terms, than Canon, Fuji, or even Panasonic/Leica. I thought Fuji was on that path, and I have the E550 and E900, but the E series appears to be discontinued. Panasonic/Leica hasn't achieved it, even in their pricier models. Noise reduction is only one of their problems. And when Canon went to 12 megapixels with the G9, it was obvious that picture quality had become secondary to them.

I'm talking about a camera that doesn't need anything secondary. Not movies ( a $130 camera does those), not giant zoom (you need lenses and a big sensor to do it right), not over-pixelation (again, self-defeating unless you go to a DSLR-sized sensor), not face detection, not auction mode, not smile detection. Instead, the V3's fast focus and fine lens enhanced by image stabilization and the application of current standards in ISO sensitivity, dynamic range enhancement, etc.. It might be a digital approximation of the Leica/50mm lens combination that Cartier Bresson shot with. If you achieve that, you've got something.

I'm going to side with David and additionally, suggest that most other ideas I've read are half-baked. I also don't think it's quite time for the R2 and when it appears I can assure you it will NOT be called an "R2". The next step is probably what is called an EVIL camera ("Electronic Viewfinder...Interchangeable Lens"). I say this because w/o interchangeable lenses, Sony won't look twice at the suggestions you come up with. Besides, as David says, we already made a comprehensive list of R2 ideas 12-18 months ago. I'm getting tired of holding my breath...

One interesting observation is that of all the discontinued Sony cameras, the R1 continues to attract new owners who are thrilled with the IQ. Like right now, there are 10 R1/R2 threads on the front page of STF!

SO, what is possible for an EVIL R2? Taking David's list:
1. Please don't change the lens.
Sony made a BIG investment in the T* lens from Zeiss. It's the ONLY lens like it in the world! We'd be silly to suggest that this lens not be continued, as that single-handedly would kill the project.
2. Please don't add more pixels.
This is equivalent to asking Sony to ignore all the advice of their Marketing departments. When the Marketing guys hear this, they will dig their heels in. David is right, of course. The marketing guys are idiots. But unfortunately, they run the company. Thus if an R2 appears, it WILL have more pixels.
3. Please leave the noise reduction decisions to us
I would have asked for an option to killl the in-camera NR. I think that is what David is suggesting.
4. Please greatly improve focus speed and reliability
This will require an invention. It can't be done unless Sony figures out another way to do AF. Small improvements can be affected by increasing the processor speed and using a faster AF motor. Perhaps that will be enough?
5. Please make the exposure bracket completely configurable i.e. 4
stops
That one is easy. Zero cost. But, unless they have that feature in their "big" cameras, it probably won't appear in an R2.
6. Please return the custom white balance to a one push system (like
F series)
I think that would be good. Another way would be to use the system normally done with dSLRs, which is to take a pic of a white/neutral card and then reference that pic to do the custom WB. That method has some nice benefits:

1. Each white frame signals a new WB group.
2. You can reference the white frame hours later to do the same custom WB.
7. Please improve the size of the RAW files, jpeg shouldn't be
mandatory
David has 2 requests here: 1) to losslessly reduce the size of the RAW files and 2) to allow a RAW w/o a JPEG. To do lossless compression, a faster processor is required.
8. Please increase shoot speed to 5 fps
This also takes a faster processor.
9. Add IS on the sensor
Although, with a short FL lens like the 14.3mm - 71.5mm zoom on the R1, IS is not much use, it WILL be effective for the OTHER lenses!
10. Make wireless connectivity an option, make wireless flash
control an option
@#$%, I'd be happy if they just increased the serial bus speed past 9600 baud! That is what makes the external flash worthless. But, yes, it Sony could do something comparable to what Nikon has done with it's flash system, that would go a long way to making people believe that Sony is serious. I'd love to see Bluetooth connectivity so that I can have a GPS receiver on my waist and find GPS data in the EXIF!

But David forgot a few important things:

1. Put the 2-3 second self timer back in.
2. Increase the size of the internal buffer (cache).
3. Get rid of the speed handicap on the CF slot!

I second his suggestion to create a 2nd SBF lens for the R2. I think a 50-250 would be about right. If the 1.7X tele can work on this new lens too, it would give the R2 the equivalent reach of a 425mm. Some may think that a dSLR type FL converter (ie, one mounted between the lens and body) would be better. Might be, but I'm not sure that is will be good with a SBF design. Besides, a converter located on the end of the lens doesn't reduce the "speed" of the lens by 1.7X. To get good, fast AF with long FL lenses, it's important to make the lens have a large aperture (small F:#).

I love SONY too

SONIA, I want to see VERY VERY fast lens (1.2 at least) all through the zoom so I could shut down not only flying birds but moon shining butts under real moon shine - no flash allowed

Cheers

please note:
shut down means shoot up

Sorry for typO

Same as R1 but with 24-200mm, auto-detect of an external flash (w/o going thru menu), battery grip, and super-fast AF (even in low-light). All these features are so common that I wonder why it wasn't possible in the R1 in the first place, esp. the fast AF in low-light and external flash detection.

Girl 2.0 Special edition; that makes girls come to you like Yuri is using in his photoshoots.

And now we are at it, it should include the self unlocking tripod for extra steady shots, and we be able to let the camera stand and walk next to the girl we wanna shoot.

Give me a CMOS chip over the CCD, and think of the laser assists like the 828 had.

Ok, enough of dreaming and back to my 828.

I would suggest a R2 with the flashes of Minolta.

A second sensor like the one in the H3. Fix it on a rotating plate together with the normal R1-sensor. So we will have a 24 to 400mm camera with the same lense!!!

Not exchanging lenses but exchanging sensors!

And please ad an HDTV-Videomode with steady shot.

Everything else is perfect to me.

The shorter timer would be great...or if we're putting in bluetooth I'm for a bluetooth remote, and make the actions like white balance and exposure bracket etc all configurable...that would be sooooo easy.

Things like the faster processor and larger buffer are all about zero dollar upgrades for Sony, they've already created that stuff since the R1 so please stick em in!

I think the speed handicap is hilarious...I'd almost like to see two MS slots now that CFs future is hazy, but nothing will make all of us happy so I'd go with speeding up the CF slot too..

The 50-250 lens would work for me...I picked 36-200 because I know its do-able and it keeps me able to shoot groups of people, but with the extender on a 250 that really does become a nice kinda long lens!

Anyway, my personal choice is two cameras, each with a perfectly married CZ lens like the R1...one a wide R2 and one a long, maybe even dropping the pixel count so they can shrink the sensor size just a bit on the long and get more lens length. I'd even LOVE to see a new R for wide and a new F for long...you know, 2/3 sensor.

I'll keep dreaming!

Me too.

The R1 is all about fabulous optics, the free-angle LCD and all that allows and

there are many sensible suggestions made here already to improve it. I have always liked the idea of two highly optimised cameras for wide/tele.

There is another development that I think that would lead the way and that is one-shot HDR. The fast sensors that are in development might allow in camera HDR for moving subjects and the prospect of 32-bit floating point files from an affordable camera is very seductive. The R-format might have been made to introduce this technology because live tone mapping direct to the LCD is the only way it could work. It would start as a niche that would not be easy to accommodate on a dSLR.

The R-HDR - what a machine that would be!

Joel.

I sure too would like a R2 but I don't think it will happen.I'm in the process of buying a R1.I think Sony will go with a cheaper DSLR soon so there's no point for them to keep manufacturing high end prosumer. So,if they would put out a cheaper replacement for the A100 with..............................live view(like the Olympus E-510) then I would go that route.I'm sure the kit lens wouldn't go near the R1 but nobody has to buy it.Would buy only the body and a CZ zoom.

Some very cool ideas.

I am lazy. I like live view and the ability to take a shot knowing what it will look like without having to check afterwards on the screen. I can see the point of a cheaper SLR and would agree in principle if it did indeed have live view. This is usually what sets Bridge cameras apart, although with camera makers now putting this into an increasing number of D SLR's I imagine it will be the norm in 4 or 5 years time. The CMOS gives superb results, but with advances in CCD technology, I again imagine these to be the way forward. The deciding factor with the R1 is and will always be the lens. Pay once for a fabulous camera with no need for additional glass (unless you go for converters, which are still cheaper than D SLR lenses). Of course, you get what you pay for hence D SLR lenses which cost a lot, give good results.

If I were Sony, I would still produce an R2 with the improvements noted here by everyone. D SLR owners would still do their thing - it would not immediately kill off A700 and lens sales. What it would do, is give an already popular camera an upgrade and I'm sure anyone could see that Sony would make a mint from all those R1 owners out there who would get an R2. It is testimony to this camera's popularity that it still sells well now and commands high prices, even in the second hand market.

Until then, my R1 will be the tool of choice for my passionate sickness which is photography. Long may it live......
LOL to all of you guys!

OK; Thinking out of the box here. Most of what we want is a firmware upgrade, and a faster processor. So is it possible for some group to retro fit the old R1's with upgraded electronics & firmware (and turn a profit at it)? Hot Roding the R1.
