i know you can create a movie of max 30sec (less with higher res) but can you record multiple 30sec movies?

its kind of dumb limiting the movie to 30secs instead of the movie being limited by storage space :/

anyways thanks for input

Hi. You can record any amout of clips as long as you have space for it. In my opinion i don't think it really matters because the quality is not really good and anyway its a great picture camera and intead of putting useless featuers into it canon should make the features that they have work better and more efficient. Faster and more precise focus and less noise when shotting at a higher ISO.

At the higher resolution, 320 X 240, you are limited to 30 seconds per clip. At the lower resolution, i believe you can get up to 120 seconds per clip.

I think the limitations are a result of the camera's internal buffer size. The raw data coming off of the CCD needs to be stored somewhere while it waits to be compressed and written to the CF card. After 30 seconds (in the higher mode) this buffer becomes full and no new data can be collected until the buffer is flushed to the card and the process is started over.

. . . I think.

so is that mean i can have a longer movie if i have a faster compact flash??

Video clip length isn't limited by the speed of the compact flash, but by the size of the fixed amount of internal buffer memory in the camera. You can shoot as many 30-second clips (at 320x240 resolution) as you want till the compact flash card is full. You do have to wait a few seconds between clips for the buffer to be written to compact flash. According to the S40 manual, a 128 MB CF card will hold a total of approximately 502 seconds of video at 320x240 resolution. The spec is the same for the S30.

While I agree with a previous writer that the quality of the video isn't as good as what you get from a camcorder, I did have some fun with it on a recent trip to Hawaii. I used my S40 in the Canon waterproof case and got some underwater video of fish and turtles. Couldn't do that with my camcorder because I don't have a waterproof case for it. The S40 is also small enough to carry in my pocket, but my camcorder isn't.

Also note that you can take all the clips and edit them and put them together in one longer video using a video editing program like Videowave.

i know some camera can save multiple videos in the CF that comes with the camera only. But not the extra CF that u bought.

so is that true for s30/s40??

On the contrary, the Movie mode is one of my most used modes on my S30 (40%). Yes, the image quality is no match for my digital 8 camcorder, but it sure beats not having something to recorde video when Kodak moments comes up. The picture quality is sufficent for VCD, and believe me, I've done video editing with IEEE 1394/firewire before, and it takes sooo much time. With this, it's quick and easy.

I've captured countless precious moments of my family on the S30 that otherwise would have gone uncaptured. It's a priceless feature.

I do wish that it can directly stream to CF card instead of internal buffer, though.

Hi. You can record any amout of clips as long as you have space
for it. In my opinion i don't think it really matters because the
quality is not really good and anyway its a great picture camera
and intead of putting useless featuers into it canon should make
the features that they have work better and more efficient. Faster
and more precise focus and less noise when shotting at a higher ISO.

If you get that much use out of the movie mode, check out the Fuji F601 and F602. They have the most incredible movie modes I've ever seen on a digital camera at any pricepoint. The F601 does 640x480 at 15fps with sound, limited only by the size of the card (Smartmedia, so 128MB max). The F602 does 640x480 at 30fps with sound, limited only by the size of the card (CF, including 1GB Microdrive support!).

Great information! Thanks... My next step was to upgrade to a DSLR, none of them unfortunately have this bell-and-whistle feature.

I'll check out the Fujis.

You can save multiple videos on the CF card that comes with the S30 or S40 or on any other CF card you buy to plug into the camera. I've done this with the Canon 16 MB CF card that came with the camera and with the Viking 256 MB CF card I bought separately.
