While I agree with a previous writer that the quality of the video
isn't as good as what you get from a camcorder, I did have some fun
with it on a recent trip to Hawaii. I used my S40 in the Canon
waterproof case and got some underwater video of fish and turtles.
Couldn't do that with my camcorder because I don't have a
waterproof case for it. The S40 is also small enough to carry in my
pocket, but my camcorder isn't.
Also note that you can take all the clips and edit them and put
them together in one longer video using a video editing program
like Videowave.

I think the limitations are a result of the camera's internal
buffer size. The raw data coming off of the CCD needs to be stored
somewhere while it waits to be compressed and written to the CF
card. After 30 seconds (in the higher mode) this buffer becomes
full and no new data can be collected until the buffer is flushed
to the card and the process is started over.
