Enjoying the D3 (images)

Hey Nic!

Well, strictly speaking of IQ only, the pics don't look all that different at first straight out of the camera. Then you notice the amazingly clean low light shots thanks to fantastic ISO and DR, and think "oh yeah I couldn't have pulled this shot off before...sweet."

White balance is easier b/c the camera meters wonderfully, and of course once you zoom the file maintains resolution/detail incredibly well (I shoot in 14-bit RAW). The files are very, very clean and detailed, and once you start cropping and zooming and editing, you have a lot more to work with.

The files are also easier to manipulate if thats your thing. Its a definite improvement, but I think once I start using lenses that cost over 250 bucks I will really see a difference.

...I'm testing the 85mm 1.4 tomorrow!

Thank you Doyle,

Well you are one of the few I know with experience with bothk and your reply is reassuring... but prime selection is what currently worries me the most.

As ou can tell I am in the middle of a thorough evaluation of what to do... but seems end january is the time where I will have enough information to make a decision.

Thanks for helping me a bit of the way.
Thomas!

The primes are cool. I'm surprised how much I instantly liked the
35mm F2! Just picked up a 85 1.4 (even though I said I'd wait) and
that thing is supposed to really shine, I'll use it tomorrow and see.

But yeah the 35 F2 and 50 1.4 are great, don't quite have the "magic"
of the 31 limited but that lens costs 3x the price. They do have
their own kind of "magic", just different...then again Im using them
on an absolutely wicked sensor ; P. I bet the 85 1.4 is just gonna
spoil me m( )m. Its my first Nikon prime that is of "Limited"
status around here ; P

Love your work man. Very clean and you always get what your subject matter is. I just traded in my D2H, and D2X to pick up a D300. I didn't want to get the D3 because I don't want to get caught like the folks that brought the D40, and then the D40X shortly followed. But after seeing your work I'm thinking of returning the D300 and getting a D3. Damm you :-( Cause we all know a D3X is coming. Hey, if you ever get to NYC we have to hang out a shoot together. I would love to see you in action and see how you get some of the people let you take thier picture. I don't think New Yorker are that easy.

It may be good, but it's not that good.

Thanks for your feedback Doyle!

I'm glad to hear your happy with the new outfit. I'll be looking out for more of your images : 0 )

All the talk about D3 soft in-camera jpgs has me concerned. Did you take these NEF or jpg?

Bryant, I was in NY last Dec!!! I'd love to get together and shoot.

You might wanna try out the D3 first, its big and has weight! I'll probably sell mine if Nikon's consumer FX model is robust enough.

Actually most of the people I take pics of recently have been friends...get more keepers that way ; P

Hey sfnikon,

I shoot in 14-bit RAW. If I need 9 frames/sec (which I will this Sat. when I shoot some friends skateboarding) I switch to 12-bit RAW.

I've always shot RAW because I can push my photos further in post processing...jpeg vs RAW is one of several things I don't agree on with Ken Rockwell ; P

really great images Doyle, you had some fun there ;)

I've got an off-topic question: what is the name of the font you used on the images (DOILA - IMEJI) ?
thanks
Amer

Sorry for the late reply...haha the post is getting old!

"Doila" my name in Japanese, "Doiru," as my Hawaiian friend says it. I took "Doila" and added "Image" with a Japanese accent..."imeji"...and there you have it.

Just looks cool and if anyone tries to put my shizzel on there site they have to spend 4 minutes blurring my name out ; P

Great shots! I've browsed through a few of your threads and your photos on Flikr. You do a fantastic job with existing light. I too have the 32/2 and it pretty much just stays on the camera (D70s) full time.

Cheers - Kevin
