Can't wait anymore for my 990

I have been waiting for my 990 for several months now(from the bigstore.com) Now I hear it may be several more months! That is just too long. The price was very good, 813.00. I think I will be cancelling my order and look for something else and maybe get a 990 much later in the year. So in the mean time what does anyone think of the JVC GC QX3U ? It's $622.00 at the WorldwideDirect.com.
I'm a big Nikon fan so please no bashing, just information.

I never placed a backorder, I got mine from system unlimited for 834.xx and they delivered in 2 days with fedex (paid 20+ $ ). I talked to Dan as I got the information from this site. They are just a small vender but they are very good. I don't know what's the status now but mine works great.

Boy, I wish I had the kind of money everyone around here seems to have -- hmm, let's spend $600 now and get an inferior digital camera and later spend another $900 for another better camera. I guess if I had the money to burn I'd buy the S20 now and give it to my wife later when I could buy the 990.

But why in heavens name don't you just buy a 990 for $900? You can get them a lot of places -- I called up a couple of camera stores and found lots. Yes, you might spend $100 or so more, but so what? You obviously have money to burn.

Thats what I did. Picked it up at a local camera store (RITZ).
Payed a lot more, but sold my 950 so it wasn't so bad

It's hard for me to believe that you would stand still for this kind of abuse. Just go to 365USA and order the damned thing; it'll be at your house in two days!

I really just wanted good information (thanks to those that gave it) No, I don't have money to burn.... just 3 young children and 2 jobs. And yes, I just went to the 365USA site and guess what? NOT in stock. I don't always have the time to surf the net on a daily basis. It's hard being a single parent and trying to set up a digital darkroom. However, I will keep trying to locate a 990 as I believe this is the best digicam under a $1000.00.

If you worked that hard for your money, why would you want to throw it away.

Do some research on who you dealing with. If you did a SEARCH of this forum you would know not to touch the bigstore.com.

Besides 365USA, check pictureline.com (call them), outpost.com etc. They are all in $900 range.
So far you saved couple dollars and you are still w/o a camera.

It's also frustrating trying to buy a camera only to be told they won't have it in stock for weeks/months, etc. I know.

I addition to Max's advice, try calling the Nikon number (um, fellows, help me out, can't recall the last two digits but Barbara, you can get it by calling 800 information) and asking for the nearest Nikon dealer. There are sure to be at least one or two in your area that will have the camera for under $1000.

I live in a very remote area and the closest dealer was 250 miles away. I called and he shipped that day and I had the camera the next day. I had to call three dealers -- each one had just sold their last. But it only took about ten minutes and then I had the camera. If you can find a dealer locally, all the better. Yes, you'll pay a little more, but you'll have the best (and not regret it). Another good idea -- look back about three weeks ago and note all the places that got the first shipment (places like Samy's in Southern California). The 800 numbers are all there, and you can try them because they're bound to have gotten more 990s.

Anyone with small children has got to have patience -- try a little perseverance and you'll be rewarded.

Barbara, and anyone else interested...

I just got off the phone and Pictureline, inc. 1 800 748-8200 has eight on the shelf right now. (7:45pm 5/30/00). I'm cancelling my order with thebigstore.com. Who knows...they might get it in tomorrow....or maybe I'd have to wait till August. Time is money, as they say. I opted for a sure $899.00 plus $14.00 2nd day UPS. Note: they didn't soak me for shipping and "handling" as some of the vendors do. The salesman was quite candid. They have received about 50 this past week and they DO NOT recycle returned Nikons either. Of course, that is a claim and can't be proven either way.

Maybe thebigstore wanted to run up some big pre-order numbers to convince Nikon to send them more....which they would sell at even higher prices (iI believe they did increase the price once the camera was shipped). Who knows?

Another example of reinventing the wheel. Yes pictureline is a reputable outfit. When we hit them with a couple hundred POs, they were not set up for - they 'fessed up.

You could have saved yourself a lot of time if you searched this forum for the information like " available", "honest", "in stock", Bigstore, etc.

20-20 hingsight. I DID check this forum and, at the time I ordered, everyone was going ga-ga about thebigstore.com and their wonderful prices. The horse is out of the barn..thanks for letting me know. On to more interesting topics..like Has anyone seen or tired the electronic cable release?
