Maybe (though a good copy of the 28-135 should be pretty sharp). Very different ranges though.

It should be. 18-55 is said to be as sharp as some of the best mordern standard zoom lenses. 28-135 is a pretty old lens from the film era.

My copy of the 28-135 is very sharp and I wouldn't trade it for the new kit lens as it would sacrifice the better build with metal mount, USM focusing, etc. plus the range is very different. I already have the 17-55 IS so the new 18-55 isn't of much interest. That said, if I were buying a new camera and starting out, the 18-55 IS seems like a much better choice than the original 18-55.

I sold my 28-135 on ebay and bought the 18-55, I must say I am very happy. For me the 18-55 looks sharper and the range fit my needs better.

Thanks for the comments. I know 18-55 is wider so I am mostly interested in the pure sharpness of the photos.
Btw, how would 18-55 compare to 10-22 sharpness wise?
I know this lens is a UWA but again only interested in the sharpness.

Thanks

Peter

Did a few test shots around the house.

It's is pretty good at 18mm wide open. Very sharp wide open at center from 24mm to 55mm.

The IS works as expected, providing 3 stops advantage @ 55mm.

Sharpness very even at all focal length until near the edges and corners, at which point the image become slightly soft.
