Hi I know panasonic sells a battery for the fz 18 at 70$ . I was wondering has anyone tried a different battery perhaps a cheaper one? If so where did you get it and how does it compare to the panasonic battery?

thanks

I think the FZ18 takes the same battery as the FZ7, FZ8, FZ30, FZ50, and others. I have an FZ50 and bought an off-brand battery from Ebay for about $10 including the shipping and if it's any worse than the factory battery, I don't notice it. There are plenty of third-party batteries available for a lot less than $70, that's for sure. Normally I am a beliiever in 'penny wise pound foolish' but there just can't be that much so special about the Panny battery that it should cost seven times as much as what I paid for an off-brand.

Some people claim the third-party batteries don't hold a charge as long, and perhaps some of them don't but frankly I don't notice any difference. Don't necessarily buy the very cheapest battery you can find, but believe me there are plenty of good ones that are not anywhere near $70!

I normally wouldn't even mention Circuit City but I saw this...

Panasonic Battery and Case for $31 and you might be able to get it locally.

Note: The kit is for a FZ7/8 and although the battery will be exactly the same, I don't know for sure that the case will fit the FZ18. Although, unless it is a skin tight fit for the FZ7/8, I imagine it would work. Still, that is a cheap price for the battery alone so the case is kind of free anyway. Free shipping too but have to pay tax.

At that price, I couldn't resist either! lol

I wasn't really planning on getting an 8gb but this will free up the two 2gb ones I have to use in my other camera and my mp3 player. Between the whole family, we have 3 mp3 players and 6 cameras that take SD cards so they won't go to waste!

I got one of these for myself. Elsewhere someone had worried the battery in this "kit" is not the same as the one that comes with the camera. It is the same -- the only difference that I could find (the model numbers are the same) is that one is made in Japan and the other in China.

I just bought my second $4 battery for my FZ 18 on eBay (with $8 shipping).
THEY COME WITH A ONE YEAR WARRANTY and are shipped from within the U.S.

I got my camera Thursday. The cheapie battery (which I'd ordered even before my camera came) works as good as the Panasonic one so I just ordered another.

The seller has an ebay store at http://stores.ebay.com/usadigishop-Inc Once you get to the eBay store, put in "PANASONIC CGA-S006" in the search area on the left. They have a lot of them

In the Owner's Manual for the DMC-FZ18, the Panasonic number on the required battery is CGR-S006A, not CGA-S006A.
Is the battery at Circuit City for sure the correct battery for the FZ18?

The battery from the kit is absolutely compatible with the FZ-18. The electrical specs published on the battery cases are identical, the battery slips right into the charger and charges up, and fits right into the camera and the camera powers up.

Why Panasonic chose to print an R or an A in the third position is an inscrutable mystery of the orient - the bottom line is that a difference that makes no difference is no difference

I bought a Hahnel spare and two powersmart branded spares. I found the Hahnel and panasonic batteries gave the longest charge and the powersmart ones drained quite a bit quicker.

It is for sure the same. I checked it against the one that came with the FZ18 -- the only difference is that one battery is made in China and the other is Japan. Each has the same model number.

I bought two from them for my FZ50 over a year ago (same battery as the 18). To this day they are both holding a charge better than the original panny.
I just ordered 2 for my TZ3.

The FZ battery is still under ten dollars.

FZ50, TZ3, and lots of old useless darkroom junk.

I emailed Panasonic tech support inquiring whether the CGA-S006A battery would work in the DMC-FZ18 camera.

Here is the response they sent:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Panasonic DMCFZ18K. We apologize for the delay in providing you with a reply to your inquiry and we hope that this delay has not caused you any inconvenience. The DMCFZ18 uses the CGR-S006A/1B and the CGR-S006A battery packs. It does not use a CGA-S006A battery back.

Thank You,
Panasonic Consumer Support
