Sony 909. Is it true?

Actually the 1GB Memory Stick will likely be available in Magic
Gate format only. This seems to be the direction Sony are (is)
headed with media.
Magic Gate is designed for a totally different market that needs to deals with copy rights. This isnt an issue with normal MS usage, so there is no need for D-cameras to have this kind of protection.

I remember reading somewhere that Sony may no longer offer the standard memory stick, only the Magic Gate. I'll have to find that info before I repeat it too much, but it was mainly related to the "upcoming" 256MB sticks. I kind of see where they're coming from though. (in the sense of production, not protection). It would seem simpler to produce one type of memory rather than two. The copy protection feature would be of no interest to us, so I hope we don't have to pay extra for Magic Gate 256MB's in the future (IF what I read was true).

Does this mean that I should return the DSC-S85 camera I bought last weekend? I mean if memory sticks suddenly become obsolete I'm pretty SOL. I still have 5 days left to evaluate the camera..

Memory sticks will not become obsolete. I hope I didn't say anything to scare you.

Magic Gate Memory Sticks are still Memory Sticks. They simply have an added feature that prevents the copying of copywrited music. That's my lame explanation of it.

Bottom line, you can use the standard Memory Stick in your camera AND you can also use the Magic Gate type of Memory Stick as well. The main difference for digicam users is the price difference between the sticks.

...another thing: At this time I have not seen Lexar or Sandisk offer Magic Gate sticks, only Sony. Anyone else?

I heard a story about...

Wel promise not to tell to anyone, the 10000001 is coming and it makes the real prize winners just by sending it outside to get some nice frames,

jacques. ;-)

You think you only have 5 days.It depends on who is on duty.I have seen people bring in things 3 years old and older .It certainly is worth a good laugh, when they are laying next to the waste basket and you see a return tag next on it.The all time favorite was a rusty clock radio from around 1979 I saw a couple of years back..

That post on that forum is posted suspeciously close to first of April. Just 12 hours away. In fact he could have written it on April fools day being 12 time zones away from server.

The main difference is MG has built in copyright protection technology that is able to encrypts and authenticats the data. You need a MagicGate able device to read any protected files, so a MagicGate stick will only work as a normal MS in a non MG device.

According to Sony's FAQ ... http://www.sony.co.jp/en/Products/MS/faq/index.html

Q: Is it possible to use MagicGate Memory Stick media in digital cameras and digital video camcorders?

A: Yes. MagicGate Memory Stick media can be used in any product with the Memory Stick slot.

Q:Is it possible to use MagicGate Memory Stick media in PC card adaptors and floppy disk adaptors designed for standard Memory Stick media?

A: These adaptors are not compatible with MagicGate, so the media will not be able to handle copyright-protected content. However, just like the standard media, the MG MS media can handle non-protected image, sound and PC data files using these adaptors.

This is why I dont see Sony dropping the normal MS line.
