Nice shots. I am a bit concerned that the noise levels in the first two look muck higher than I would have expected. Note the dark green area at the top of the second image. Even the darker brown areas in the excellent monkey image shows quite a bit of what might be noise. Am I missing something here? My D80 is cleaner than that at ISO 400. I am waiting to get my D300. I hope that maybe this was underexposed and then cranked up in PP revealing more noise than expected. Otherwise, this is not a good thing. I am startuing to get worried that I won't be happy with my D300 at ISO 200-400.

Thank you. To use this camera is a joy. Once I will have a clue regarding all the AF options it will be even better. Today I sometimes focused manually.

Thank you! I also like the Cormorant images the most. When I saw the background I knew the images will work.

The only problem was that the birds didn´t cooperate and looked the other way most of the time.

Hi,

Thank you. The D300 is not noiseless but I like the new approach Nikon has taken regarding noise. The noise is very small ( high frequency ) and there is no smear of details. I always prefer a crisp image over a smooth one.

I think that Lightroom also might not be the best way to process the files but I can´t deal with Capture anymore.

I think it is because I haven´t played with the camera before this shooting. AF in modern cameras offers so many options that it is easy to get lost.

Sometimes the camera does not focus - I mean the initial focusing. I guess it has something to do with the lock on feature. I will disable it in the future. For the monkey shot the camera prefers to focus on the branch. I lost a couple of images because of this. On the other hand: I tried to use the AUTO - AF that means 51 fields and the camera decides where to focus. With single AF - fields there was no problem at all.

First I shot manual but than I tried some in Auto too. The D300 does a great job in Auto but maybe a -0.7 exp. comp in Matrix will help for nature shots. The Nikon now goes more for the shadows instead of highlight prevention ( similar to Canon ).
