I have the Canon lens adapter (58mm) and Lensmate (49mm).

I would like to add wide angle AND telephoto lenses to my camera.

Should I choose the Canon 58mm add-on's or should I be looking for something better to fit on the lensmate.

I do not want to purchase another adapter....I would like to know what my best options are for a 58mm or 49mm add on lens?

Many thanks for any help!

I may get shot for saying this, on this paticular forum, but you would be "hard pressed" to find a better lenses than Canon (58mm). Naturally, Olympus also makes an excellent wide angle lens that is 49mm.

usually it's one or the other. people usually say to get the bigger of the two and get a step down ring to adapt for smaller cameras.

but it depends, do you want bulk sticking out. the 250d and 500d wide etc, will only fit the 58mm - or using a step up for the lensmate.

I don't mind what the camera looks like with the extra lenses...I just want to find the best possible quality for 49mm or 58mm.

Am I correct in thinking that the Canon add-ons are the best solution?

There have been tonnes of threads talking about this topic, although it's sometimes difficult to track them down with the somewhat inadequate search feature.

There have been a few recent threads showing examples of the Tiffen Megaplus 2x teleconverter and this is what I'm going for. I don't see any problems with CA (chromatic aberrations) or softness with this lens that so many people have warned against, and the price is right. See here for an untouched image with the Tiffen 2x: http://www.pbase.com/image/1746398/original This place: http://www.dcprodirect.com/new/index.asp?Title=7&GroupId=&CategoryID=96&BrowseAll=yes&CameraId=&ManufacturerId=&Manufacturer=&Model=&bycamera=&KitId=353&BundledKits=&viewkit=yes has a kit with the Tiffen Megaplus 2x teleconverter and 0.75x wide converter along with a step ring to fit the Lensmate...all for $130 USD. Unfortunately these are on backorder at the moment.

Make sure you don't get the cheaper Tiffen lenses with 37mm threads as I think these are the ones that people have found to be awful. The 43mm Megaplus ones look very good, esp. for the price.

I haven't seen any comparison tests myself, but I think the best optical quality would be achieved with the Olympus B-300, but this thing is huge, much more expensive, hard to find, and only 1.7x. The Canon costs a bit more than the Tiffen and is only 1.5x, but has possibly slightly better optics and allows more vignette-free zoom range. Personally, I find the quality of the Tiffen lens more than adequate, and its advantages such as price and greater magnification make it my choice. I can't wait to try it out at my aunt's wedding this summer for the better subject isolation (blurred background) and at the zoo for its effective 6x zoom with the G2! :) I just need to find a place that has this set in stock.

I haven't seen too many samples from the 0.75x, but what I have seen looks quite good as well.

i havn't tried any other. the lenses are designed for that camera, the 250d anyway. and they don't make any other size but 58mm

if you use those lenses, i'd use the canon adapter, to make sure it's not too heavy for the end.

Check out Lisa Neals gallery. She has comparison shots of the G2 and Olympus A200 tele lens. The A200 is less expensive than the Olympus B300.

Hi Mickey,

so you are using a step down ring or Tiffen Lens Mount?

It's better the step down ring (49mm to 43mm to use with Lensmate) or the Tiffen lens Mount for Teleconverter?

Tanx a lot for your aid, Maurizio.

I actually haven't bought these lenses yet...I'm trying to find a place that has a good deal like DCPro but who has them in stock. However, when I do get them, I'll be using the Lensmate with a step ring (since I've already bought it), but the tiffen adapter may result in slightly less vignetting since it won't need a step ring. The step ring that comes with the Tiffen set is supposed to be a special ultra-thin one so it shouldn't affect the vignetting too much though.

I have both the Oly B300 and the Tiffen Megaplus teleconverters. I used the Tiffen with a Lensmate and Tiffen step-down ring (though I wouldn't call my ring "ultra thin"). I thought the quality of my pics with the Tiffen was fine, but had vignetting all of the time and got tired of cropping or cloning it out. I didn't think of trying the Tiffen adapter instead of the Lensmate, but believe I will get one since it is so cheap. The B300 is great, and I like the fact that you can back off of full zoom some and still have no vignetting.

I bought the dedicated wide angle adapter for G2. My opinion is, the Barrel distortion makes it not suitable for group foto. But if you don't mind with the Barrel distortion, it is probably useful for panorama or landscape fotography.

For myself, I seldomly use it because of the distortion. For panorama, I prefer to take several foto then stich it.

I don't have the tele adaptor or macro, and would like to hear owner opinion about it.

In response to the question since I took the shot: This was a picture straight out of the camera with no cropping and no post processing. I use the tiffen adapter with no vignetting. Under certain circumstances shadoowing appears on the LCD but I have not had this appear in any of my shots. Here's a cropped shot I took today,

Thanks.

right. See here for an untouched image with the Tiffen 2x:

Sounds like I need to spend the $15 to give the tiffen adapter a try. I wonder if it is a hair shorter than the lensmate, enabling it to bring the main lens and the telephoto closer together and eliminating the vignetting/shading.

Yeah, sorry if I made it seem like I took the photo. I was just posting a link to Chris's images since I don't have the lens yet.

I doubt the Tiffen adapter is any shorter cause the Lensmate is extremely close to the G2 lens at full extension. The only difference is that the Tiffen adapter doesn't need a step ring so you'll get the lens that extra mm or two closer.

BTW, you'd probably notice more vignetting when Processing with something like Powershovel and getting the extra 105,000 pixels around the edge. ;)

Your probably right. Having slept on the matter (actually I just shoved it to the back of my mind until about 30 seconds ago) I've decided against purchasing the Tiffen adapter. The bit of darkening at the corners doesn't bother me all that much and I'm still left with plenty of useful, good-looking image. Heck, it's invisible when compared to the vignetting I found when I connected the G2 to a telescope.

I'm sure there is a funny joke there, but I don't know about Powershovel and I choose not to look into it. That smirky guy at the end of your comment tells me I'll only find myself trapped reading several hundred emails across a few dozen threads about an issue of which I am currently blissfully unaware.
