It's inside a box which is inside a steel container on a cargo ship somewhere in the Pacific Ocean or maybe Nikon is using air freight, in which case it's in a box on a pallet at an airport somewhere waiting to be loaded or waiting to clear customs. :)

sorry but no way did nikon produce 42,000 d3's in that time frame considering that production is not optimized as of yet

By Nikons own statements made in august and on numerous sites the d3 factory at the present time is only able to poduce a maximum of about 400 units a day until all production is standerdized or in other words untill they get about a 99 percent no bugs in the building of the body reached.

any new venture is sure to have very tight quality control and the rate of manufacture will be very low untill that control is satisfied that the syatem is producing at optimal results.

We do not want to be in the same boat as the current canon shoters with their problems and numerous quality issues with their 1dm111

i rather commend nikon for trying to do the right thing and make sure the product is good

Maybe you should read the article Rob Galbraith wrote about the factory tour Nikon gave. D3s were being produced at announcement time at about 1/2-2/3 of the final rate, which was to be achieved in September. 12,000 per month target- 3 months @ 12,000 = 36,000 bodies, plus maybe 6,000-8,000 in August is 42-44,000

Terminal case of Lens Lust.

yes but it was hoping to be achieved in september and not quranteed.

I think if there are units making it out with a hot pixel problem then the factory is not up to optimized speed as of yet.

therefor it is still only able to produce the original count of less than 400 units a day or 2000 units a week at optimal

actual production maybe much lower than that

Here's a question. Do you know for a fact that the factory is not operational 7 days a week?

400 cameras a day times 30 days = 12,000 cameras per month.

I ask because we have statements (apparently from Nikon) that say 12,000/month and 400/day. Depending on the work schedule they are either both correct or in conflict.

Japan factory only works 5 day week . Thailand works 24/7 and they are not even up to speed on the d300 which has less quality control than the d3

You seem to be very on top of Nikon's production/QC capabilities for someone who has been on here for all of 2 days.

Just saying....

And I mean NOW! 8-)

I have watched this forum for years but never bothered to post or sign up.

My background is a retailer of nikonn products for almost twenty years until i burned out from retail and decided to go back into shooting full time.

While retailing and managing a camera store i had the pleasure of touring the previous nikon factory that was destroyed by an earthquake.

At that time the factory was making the f5 and was typically not sending out what was said to be their capabilities described in the press releases and such.

Nikon has always had a history of keeping production down on their flagship cameras so as to keep prices at a premium.

it is called marketing and is not condusive to them to over saturate the market with their flagship

Did you start with the original F or one of the rangefinders? My first was a F2 in 1972.
