Finally Dumped The G2

I just wonder why you say you "dumped" the G2? Dumped makes it sound like its garbage or trash which you admit it is not. Interesting choice of words.
There are some interesting comments.... There are a few things that
I need to address here the main one being I really dont use the S30
for serious use I admit that the G2 is a fine camera and I am not
here to knock the masses that have bought one I can see that you
all love them and yes its a fine camera in its class
BUT !!
For serious photography I still use my trusty R5 with a LEICA
VARIO-ELMAR-R 21-35 mm f/3.5-4 now this kicks ass and I think it
will be a while before I invest any serious cash into a pro digital
camera. I have used some very fine digital units and compared
quite a number of them.

Thanks again guys

Well it was fun having the G2 but it had to go..... I bought this
camera a few weeks ago and to be honest I was not to impressed I
had tested the S30,S40 and the Black G2 but I cannot justify the
cost difference between the s30 and the G2 actually to be honest
the picture quality between the too seem almost the same. I know
the critics out there will argue over this one but with almost $700
Canadian difference between them the Cons outway the Pros

What with cracking problems on the G2, firmware updates, and
countless other problems I am sorry but it had to go.

I did settle for the s30, case , 1gig Microdrive , Datavault ,
Paper and 2 new printer inks I think this was the way for me
to.....as it was the same cost well almost I had change

Thanks for all the help and advice that people gave on this forum
you have all been a great help.

Thanks Guys

Mark

What do you mean by softest focus ? It is a bit puzzling for me. Do you mean nothing is in focus or blur or soft ? They are quite different.
i haven't seen the d30 or 60 yet, and that's partly lens dependent.
even begginner shots, the g2 takes fine pictures. my pro 90 takes
sharp pictures, but under certain circumstances it may not focus.
but it rarely happens.

Tricky focusing issues for S30 ? I found none so far other than the
usual fail to focus at low light and/or on area lack of contrast
which I believe applies to all powershot as far as I read here.

dunno. all i do know is that i've read about the s30 and it's
problems. and every picture i see has a soft focus. maybe it's just
me, but i like a clear sharp picture, i guess i have one of those
critical eyes i guess....

Since everyone is weighing in.....

I spent a lot of time trying to decide between the S30, the G2, and a few other cameras. In the end, I decided to purchase the S30. In my opinion, it really depends on what you want to use it for. First of all, I don't take pictures for a living (so I'm not going to invest a huge sum of money in a pro camera DSLR). Second, I have several film camera's including a Canon Elph (APS) and a Canon EOS SLR (35 mm) with lenses, flahes, etc. So for me the decision was pretty straight forward. I didn't want to invest the money to replace the SLR and associated equipment. However, I wanted to experiment with digital photography (my wife and I have a new baby and everyone is asking for pictures!) So, when I go to a party, or my wife and I have family over to the house, etc., I have the S30 in my pocket (and yes, it does fit nicely into a coat pocket or my shorts pocket. My wife and I attended a black tie event this past weekend and my S30 was right there with us in my inside coat pocket. Don't think the G2 would've made it to the party!).

When I want to take the highest quality picture possible, I get out my 35mm SLR. It's resolution is fantastic! The G2 certainly has more features than an S30. However, it doesn't have the same number of features as a DSLR. If you want portability, the S30 wins hands down. If picture quality is your main concern, the G2 will do better in certain conditions. Having the hot shoe gives you an advantage on the G2. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix a flash picture from the S30 in Photoshop (hey, isn't post processing one of the reasons to get into digital photography in the first place?). Who knows, if I didn't have the film equipment to fall back on, the extra features on the G2 might have outweighed the portability of the S30?

Oh well, one more persons rantings.....

most if not all pictures i've seen, had a soft touch. if there is a fine line you'll see it, but it's not crisp. it doesn't jump out at you. of course is good for people shots. but for me, it would never suit me.

I must agree it really does matter as to just what you really are needing in a camera..and this is why there are so many choices..I used my little Pentax H3 35mm for many years..Then the Canon A1 35mm sure was a big step forward..Then a jump into a 2-1/4 Hasselblad with an extra 150mm lens great pictures but what a pain heavy and not compact by any means..it sits in the closet..My first digital camera was a Casio Q-300 not 640x480 4 megs of flash storage you could hardly make out a face and talk about no battery life I build a C cell holder to supply the needed juice..Then came the Kodak DC-280 a real nice little compact camera 2 Meg pixel I really enjoyed using this camera and still use it..I now have a G2 and enjoy the great improvment in speed and super clear pictures..also the hot shoe and movable LCD..But again it really depends on just what you need in a camera.

G1/G2 are great cameras, so are S30/S40, so are D30/D60. Each has its place in the world, and they can all exist peacefully, like we all can. :)

OK, OK, I guess you and Gary Ng are right, the less-resolution,
less flexible, short battery life, poorer lensed S30 must be
superior to the much more highly rated G2.

I'll be off now, getting low light and much easier and BETTER flash
photos with my G2 and 420EX "toys"... sheeesh!
