Big rant coming up.

I ordered the FA35 from Adorama on Wednesday morning and to be quite honest, I was more concerned about how Adorama was going to handle the order than I was about UPS. I checked my tracking # this morning and it said "in transit - on time" expected delivery 11/30. So I waited patiently around the house all day long, didn't even step out for one second. I finally checked the tracking # at 6pm and the driver conveniently wrote that "the receiver did not have enough funds on first delivery attempt"

What a flat out LIE! I made sure that I had enough money to cover the charges incurred but more importantly, he never showed up!! I called UPS to complain and now I'm waiting on a call back to see if either A) the driver will deliver it or B) I will pick it up somewhere. I get the feeling that I won't be seeing my package until Monday morning.

UPS....NEVER AGAIN!

hope that the order came from within canada

UPS has their own brokarage station at the border, therefore you pay the pst/gst on your goods, AND a "brokerage fee".

that is why if i ever ship from the states i call and request that ANYTHING be used other than UPS, at the very least i ask them to use USPS, it takes longer, but its dirt cheap and actualy gets to you... eventualy.

Actually USPS has CANCELLED parcel post to Canada so speed has really improved. I've used Expedited (3-5 days) for a number of packages in the last month. The brokerage fee on expedited is $8 instead of $5 for slower service though and Customs actually checks and charges me GST. I never had that happen with parcel post. UPS air to Canada don't charge brokerage fees, just ground, and beware, they're obscenely high.

Unfortunately for me, it was a big OOPS!

I would have opted for USPS but Adorama only offers two choices for international shipping, UPS and Fed-Ex. As advertised on their site, UPS only charges brokerage fees if it's ground shipping, I went with air shipping.

I called UPS and tore into them. The woman I spoke to said that the driver told her that a child answered the door and so the conversation went something like this:

Me: I don't have any kids

Her: Do you live in an apartment?

Me: No, it's a house

Her: Is there only one family that lives in the house?

Me: Yes, one family, no kids

Her: Is it a shared unit?

Me: No, one house, one door, one family, no kids

Her: But you said he had the wrong door? (I think she was insinuating that I somehow was at fault had I been living in a shared unit or something, who knows)

Me thinking: No sh** sherlock, if he had the right door we wouldn't be having this

conversation, would we? Real answer: Of course he had the wrong door but I personally think he's lying again in order to cover his tracks. You do have the correct address don't you?

Her: Yes, well I'm sorry for the inconvenience we'll ship it to you on Monday

Me: That's not good enough for me. I paid you a substantial amount of money to have a package delivered to me today, you did not follow through. I could understand if you told me that you're backlogged because of the Christmas rush but the fact is that your driver lied and said he knocked on my door and that I didn't have sufficient funds. That is unacceptable to me and I expect the package by today but since your drivers have gone home now, I'll settle for tomorrow.

Her: We'll "try" to get the package to you tomorrow but I can't guarantee it

Me: Well, if I don't get the package tomorrow, you'll have to adjust the shipping charges.

Her: I'll see what I can do

She called back a half hour later and told me that the package will be delivered tomorrow. We'll just have to wait (again) and see!

The driver was probably swamped and couldn't make it to you in time and needed a category to list the package under. Give the guy a break. He has to work 12 hours a day this time of year and doesn't need a supervisor climbing his ass when he gets back to the depot. He needs to get home to his wife and kids on a Friday evening. You have the rest of your life to use that camera. That guy has to get his job done the best way he can. Kids with new toys need a little more empathy, and a whole lot more patience.

You obviously completely missed what I said. I could easily understand if he was swamped due to the Christmas rush or some other excuse, but the fact still remains that he lied first by saying that I didn't have sufficient funds and then lied again by saying that a child answered the door. Sounds to me like this guys took on too many coffee breaks and needed an excuse. Bottom line is that I paid for a service that wasn't provided, the guy still had 1 1/2 hours left on his shift. No reason for him to bail out on me.

I have had nearly identical experiences with UPS. It may partly depend on the local office. When my local office was in Tempe, Arizona, I had this problem more than once. In Corrales, New Mexico, on the other hand, I have had drivers come by at 9:00 PM.

DHL experience:

I was expecting shipping from Dell. It was ground shipping handled by DHL. They had my package with courier for 3 days in a row without delivering it to me. Finally after multiple calls they delivered on 4th day. It took 3 days to get package to local DHL and 4 to get it to me from 3 miles away.
UPS experience:

I ordered computer staff from newegg yesterday with 3 days ground shipping today at 1PM I had package near my doors.

From what you describe you were lucky to order it C.O.D otherwise they would have just left the package at the wrong address - yes that would have been worse! That would have been a real mess to straighten out.
FedEx, USP, USPS, they all have their horror stories. :-)
Enjoy the lens when you do get it!

And then the next time you don't have any choice but UPS you won't take your business to another merchant. Or Fedex will screw up and you'll go back to UPS. Been there, done that.

You missed what I said. He needed a category to put the package under to cover the fact that he didn't deliver it. He probably covered his ass with his response to the dispatcher. Drivers are supposed to deliver every package. They aren't supposed to bring them back because they have to take the time and money to get them out there again. I'll tell you this. If you push the whole thing and make it obvious the guy lied to cover his ass, he might lose his job. My brother in law worked his whole working life with UPS. I have several other friends who are UPS employees. The work is tough, the rules tougher and their job is dependent on good performance.

All I suggest is just let the damn thing die. It is definitely not worth that guy having some real work problems just because you got your camera a day late. If you want that on your conscience then have it there, but don't expect sympathy from folks who see your lack of empathy and impatience through it all. Give the damn guy a beak. He is just a hard working fellow trying to get home on a Friday evening. You getting your new toy 12 hours late isn't going to keep you from spending the weekend with your family or perhaps your holidays with money for Christmas gifts. If the guy is faced with a work load that makes him lie like you said, then he surely needs some compassion, not some kid pushing the supervisors into his face.

Is USPS International Express Mail reliable for international shipping? Can you track your order?

Thanks
John

i don't know about international orders as such, but i can tell you from the coal face (being a courier working for a large parcel freight company in our region) that if we don't get our work done we end up, up to our neck in it, you know at the start of a run how much work you have to do and the amount of time you have to do it in, you know if you can get it done by the workload and if its not going to happen you let your supervisor know and they organize a work around.

we use 4t trucks and fill that truck with freight at the start of a run, empty it within 4 hours (45+ drops) and the refill it with more freight from our "pickup costumers" to be taken out on the next run, we do two runs per day with everything from domestic parcels to large industrial orders with all classes of fright from dangerous goods to medical supplies, C.O.D. and prepaid freight and we always have to make it work, its part of the job.

a large international concern like UPS (who does have a depot in Brisbane, queensland, Australia) would have systems in place to ensure their work is done within a reasonable time frame even if its done by contractors...

on the other side of the coin, being in the industry i do know of drivers that will "shortcut" their runs and avoid doing areas that they don't like, we just refer to that as being LAZY...

Really never? I was always told 'don't burn your bridges' it has saved me a lot of embarrassing back pedalling.

the fact is big companies are made up of lots of people and they stuff up, but by and large they deliver, Vania you must forgive and move on , i understand the disappointed i would be disappointed as well, but hey that's life and your going to have a new lens i'm very jealous.

cheers,
John

i absolutely hate UPS and some of their lazy delivery workers. I've had them flat out lie to me that they attempted delivery on packages, with the lie that nobody was available to answer the door. considering that my office is right beside the front door, and I am home most of the days, especially when a package is due.

considering that the UPS fellows seem to always miss me, while for some uncanny reason, the Purolator deliveries always are on time and they always catch me at home...

and don't get me started on those bogus broker additional charges that UPS automatically tacks on!

Yes, in fact USPS oversees tracking seems to be more up to date than USPS domestic tracking.

I sell a bit though ebay, and watched in horror as my USPS shipment sat for six weeks (!) in Italian customs, in destination to a impatient buyer.
