Must Read: Tutorial on Histograms!

I enjoyed it as well, it is very thorough in describing what the histogram s and does and how to read it. An excellent write up.

I forgot to mention that the Levels command is strongly recommended to be used instead of brightness, contrast and variations commands. When doing the individual R, G and B channels, Levels gives quite a bit of latitude in dealing with color casts and brightness. However it does not replace Curves command, which is like Levels but is customizable to non-linear functions.
Try this one, it shows how to manipulate the controls on
histograms. This dialogue in Photoshop is called Levels.
