Finally Dumped The G2

I have a S30 and I love the portability of it. I carry it everywhere and I've gotten countless pictures that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten if I had a camera the size of G2 (because I wouldn't have the camera with me).

I would like the hotshoe, but to be honest, if I want to carry a camera that's not pockable, I will get a used D30 instead of the G2. The price diff is not significant enough (I already have some EF lenses) for me to comprimise with a fixed lens. With a DSLR you got so much more than a hot shoe and interchangable lens.

IMHO, when used D30 price hopefully approarches $1000 in the next few months, the appeal of G2 (hotshoe, faster lens) will start to wear off.

Well it was fun having the G2 but it had to go..... I bought this
camera a few weeks ago and to be honest I was not to impressed I
had tested the S30,S40 and the Black G2 but I cannot justify the
cost difference between the s30 and the G2 actually to be honest
the picture quality between the too seem almost the same. I know
the critics out there will argue over this one but with almost $700
Canadian difference between them the Cons outway the Pros

Tricky focusing issues for S30 ? I found none so far other than the
usual fail to focus at low light and/or on area lack of contrast
which I believe applies to all powershot as far as I read here.

Mike
dunno. all i do know is that i've read about the s30 and it's problems. and every picture i see has a soft focus. maybe it's just me, but i like a clear sharp picture, i guess i have one of those critical eyes i guess....

Mark,

I regularly use both the G2 and S30. I really like the portability of the S30 and it does take very good pictures. However, for my serious pictures the G2 produces noticably sharper images (especially in the corners) and higher resolution. But if you limit your prints to 4x6 or 5x7 you may not notice much difference. Either camera gives you room to grow your skills and the S30 certainly fills the bill at giving you a lot of bag-for-the-buck........ Happy shooting.

Tony

P.S. I have not had any focusing problems with either camera. Canon generally uses a less aggressive sharpening algorithm compared to many other cameras. If you use a bit of unsharpen mask on your images they will become very sharp. Many people confuse this with an out of focus condition.

What with cracking problems on the G2, firmware updates, and
countless other problems I am sorry but it had to go.

I did settle for the s30, case , 1gig Microdrive , Datavault ,
Paper and 2 new printer inks I think this was the way for me
to.....as it was the same cost well almost I had change

I didn't realize that E-TTL and zoom head are the guarantee for taking non-cheap pictures :-)
Less expensive is good, "cheaper" pictures are not!
The S30 will have firmware updates too. They are a good thing.

The biggest plus for the G2 - flash hotshoe. There is no
comparison of shots between bounce-flash and the built-in flash.
But then if you never tried it...

Have fun with the S30!!!

You can use a piece of IR filters to block the internal flash, well a piece of exposed negative works too.

Just a thought about the absence of a shoe on the S30/40. I have a
slave digiflash which satisfies my infrequent need for a higher
flash output. I would have appreciated a dummy shoe on my S40
negating the need for a bracket although sometimes as the situation
dictates, I just hold it. Works well. Portability was my priority
experienced from my use of film cameras. The portibility of the S40
has proven to be a suitable choice for me.
The main problem there is that you are still flashing the built-in
flash directly into the subject's eyes - red-eye city. Even
without bouncing, a 420EX moves the flash 6 or so inches from the
lens, reducing the occurence of red-eye.

I have read about focusing problems on D30/D60/G2/S40/S30 and saw pictures that has soft focus taken by them. Does that mean all of them have focusing problems ?

Why not the S40 and what are these other countless problems you talk about? Firmware updates should not be considered a problem.

but if u get rid of the noise algorithm after the camera already did the processing internally. Is that means the result after using the unsharp mask will be around the same??

Without the swivel LCD and hotshoe, you have an inferior camera.
It's hard to understand how you could prefer the S30...

Without interchangable lens, multiple battery capability, and large CMOS/CCD, G2's is considered inferior toy camera by some. At least S30 is pocketable.

My point is, your sweeping generalization is unconstructive.

On the contrary, when using slave, the built-in flash gives the subject the interesting highlight (small bright white spots) in the eyes that sometimes pure bounced flash lacks.

Remember, most of the time the built-in flash needs to be turned down in a slave application, providing just enough light to trigger the slave as well as providing the highlights in eyes.

Who wants a pocketable camera. NOT ME! makes bulges, uncomfortable, and I like a camera with a bit of heft to it...not something light and flimsy feeling.

OK, OK, I guess you and Gary Ng are right, the less-resolution, less flexible, short battery life, poorer lensed S30 must be superior to the much more highly rated G2.

I'll be off now, getting low light and much easier and BETTER flash photos with my G2 and 420EX "toys"... sheeesh!

To each his own, as they say. The S30 is a very good camera and will serve you well. The external flash was the #1 reason I picked the G2 and I have been very happy. But then again I take a lot of shots indoors so flash power and flexibility are very important to me.

I do not think you intended for this thread to become a shouting match between the G2 and S30 users, although the subject line might encourage such. The G2 is an overall better camera than the S30, but for many people the S30 is perfectly adequate.

huh ? Did I say that or even implied that ? I just pointed out that there can be options for external flash, even for S30. Your G2 is bigger, does that make you feel better ?

of all the pictures i've seen, the s30/40 have to softest focus. whether it's because of user error is unknown.

i haven't seen the d30 or 60 yet, and that's partly lens dependent. even begginner shots, the g2 takes fine pictures. my pro 90 takes sharp pictures, but under certain circumstances it may not focus. but it rarely happens.

There are some interesting comments.... There are a few things that I need to address here the main one being I really dont use the S30 for serious use I admit that the G2 is a fine camera and I am not here to knock the masses that have bought one I can see that you all love them and yes its a fine camera in its class
BUT !!

For serious photography I still use my trusty R5 with a LEICA VARIO-ELMAR-R 21-35 mm f/3.5-4 now this kicks ass and I think it will be a while before I invest any serious cash into a pro digital camera. I have used some very fine digital units and compared quite a number of them.

Thanks again guys
