Steve's Digicams gives a review of the P9. In his rather positive conclusions, he also mentions other positive things regarding the Memory Stick:

"I had my doubts about Memory Stick modules when they first appeared but they are now plentiful and larger in capacity (up to 128MB as of 04/2002) and have been reduced in price to almost the same level as CompactFlash. Memory Sticks are slower at Read/Write operations than CompactFlash but Sony still promises performance improvements with the larger cards coming in the near future."

Sony's been promising this for a while. At comdex several years back, Sony had a display detailing its proposed timeline to introduce larger size MS. I threw away that timeline, when it became useless. Sony is far behind that proposed schedule. I expect we'll see larger MS, just not as soon as we would like, or as soon as Sony once promised (and still hints at.)

When Sony signed the manufacturing deal with LEXAR, the stated purpose was to use the LEXAR technology to produce fast Memory Sticks. I suspect that this will happen but the time schedule is the big question.

This is different. Trust me here.

We have reviewers of both magazine as well as online who are publishing an upcoming change in MS status. That creates an entirely different forecast for MS in the near future.

Watch for it. :)

I would tend to trust what Steve says here: "near future".

Not that this means "cast in concrete" or anything, but the manager of a Best Buy store in Fort Worth (TX) told me the other day that he was told to plan on having the 256 mb MS sometime in June ... FWIW.

Nope. I've stated several times that I'm not interested in buying it.

But my real interest in it lays in its color. I think it's an interesting camera, a good solution for some folks. Not the best solution for everyone.

Hopefully not a stupid question:

When they say that the transfer rates will be faster, does that mean that the sticks are faster or the devices are going to get faster at reading them?

Not a stupid question at all. Here is my guess.

The sticks will likely be faster, as they say they've wanted to do for some time now. In order to benefit from that speed, however, the camera you use will probably need to be designed to process for the faster stick, as well. In other words, if you can use that faster stick in today's camera, it will probably go at the same speed as we have always gone.

This may work just like CD-R drives. The drives can write faster speed CDs, but they can also write at slower speeds.

My understanding is the current generation all the way to 1 GB (contracted with Lexar) will not cause any older devices to be obsolete. This backward compability is part of required MS specification.

Supposely the next generation is contracted with SanDisk. How will that be from what I understand is still up in the air as Lexar claims in order for SanDisk to produce any MS on their own, SanDisk need to first obtain lic. rights from Lexar as all MS has Lexar's controller interface built in.

We'll have to see how it all plays out. I'm sure it will continue to be interesting and exciting, as is par for the course with Sony. :)

.
Not new news I guess but thought some would be interested.

I sent Sony an e-mail asking if the 707 would be able to use the new 256mb stick when it was released. This is what I got back from them lol............not much help would you say?

Lenny,

Thank you for contacting SONY.

Regretfully, this type of information is not released to us prior to announcement of the product. When a 256MB Memory Stick is announced we will then be able to provide you with an answer. Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance.
