This is a Gold American Eagle gold coin shot with a Sony A100 using a KM 100 mm f2.8 macro lens. Shot was taken with a 2 second delay, on a tripod, at f13 with an exposure of 1/10th sec. The background is a slab of agate.

Very nice shot. I suspect the full size image is very impressive.

A side note, how about a quick 20% profit on your coin? Is $60 enough, I might even consider a full 30%. :-)

Best wide-angle lens? Two steps backward. Look for the 'ah-ha'.

Just a joke. Making a reference to the $50 face value v the value of an once of gold.

Oh I get it, ahha, no.

The US isn't the only country to put absurdly low face values on their coins, below is a one ounce Canadian gold coin with $50 face. The Brit equvalent, the Britannia, is a little closer at 100 pounds but still low. These coins are worth in the low to mid $800 range. Put another way, I'm hoping to purchase an A700 for an ounce and a quarter of gold in a few months.

Beautiful coin, well captured.

I don't think I've seen the reverse of the maple leaf.

As an aside;

Todays price of gold bullion is $794.00 (USD), and the one oz coins are available for purchase @ $828.20. About a 4% markup over bullion. I don't know if the last 4% is a bargain or not, but the first $794 is a Looooooong way from the $50 face value.

For something as shallow as a coin, you shouldn't need f/13.

The problem is that you have to chase the light and quite often aren't shooting dead on. Since I'm shooting on a tripod and the shutter speed doesn't bother me, I've heavily reduced the number of shots with only one side of the coin focused.
