Is a store sample R1 with full warranty worth $500, or is this too much for an older design?
I kind of want it because the R1 is IMHO the last ever of this type of camera.

IMHO it is a good price,but in order to secure your buy,if this service stands in your country,buy the 5(=4+1) year warranty extension by Sony.The camera is great if you are an landscape photographer,using sensitivities up to 400 ISO.

It's a great price IF the camera hasn't been abused, and most store models that I have seen are completely trashed. Is this a store that allows access to anyone who walks by or are their cameras behind glass and only accessible by their sales people? If the first, I wouldn't even consider it. If the second, then you might be in business.

Ditto on that. If it's been sitting out in the open where every kid in the world who's been picking their noses has access to it, no, I'd pass as well. Behind a clase like the way Wolf/Ritz handles them, it may very well be fine.
 
Buy it!
The lens alone is worth the price.

A great camera in most shooting situations. Benefits from a contemplative, unhurried approach to photography
