Took this Heavy Jumper at the Mangrove walk area in one of our reserves. Really a beauty and HUGE....abt 2-3cm.

FZ30+Raynox 250, F8,1/30s, ISO80, 2 diffuse flash, handheld
  1. 1: Intro

  1. 2:Front look

  1. 3: Side..showing body patterns

  1. 4: Down the railing

  1. 5: Nice pose

  1. 6:Watching the world go by

  1. 7 Side closer view

  1. 8: Staring in the darkness

The above case illustrates the light drop off due to the shutter speed of 1/30s...hence the pitch black. I wanted to get a better BG, so I used a tripod for the next shot at 1/4s. This was beyond the handheld speed hence the need for tripod. The long shutter exposed for the green BG and the flash was used to light up the shadow....but I forgot to remove it from my flash bracket....hence the very directional lighting.
  1. 9: Slow shutter

Tan, the only thing that bothers me about these images is what appears to be out-of-whack DOF. The blurred foregrounds and backgrounds don't look very natural. Gotta ask the question: didya play with it in PP?

Disclaimer: Not meant as criticism because there's some very good detail in all pictures.

..for the blurred fore and background.

Macro photography has very limited DOF, and for my set up 1-3mm..so anything before and after the 'sweet' spot will be out of focus.

Yes, I realize that but when I looked at Pic #4, a fair amount of the back end of the Jumper looks to be in focus while the DOF appears to end halfway through its body on both sides. Just struck me as odd, with or without the Raynox, although the camera angle may have come into play. No big thing. I was just curious.
Thanks,

Its actually not that in focus. For this #4, the camera is tilted to get more of hte body in the DOF.

Great pics and PP. The one with ants passing by is remarkable.

Tripos shots provide completely different colo0rs, but sadly it's harder to use especially with moving subjects.

Why don't you raise the Background-flash output and use F11 and faster shutter speeds ?

Thanks.

Well the BG is quite far away, so would need a higher flash power for that....but anyway, my flash has no manual power control, so have to make do.
