Hello Everyone, Hope you had a good holiday weekend. As some of you may know I got a Canon G9 as soon as it became available at retail stores, and wrote a comment about it. However I returned it after 1 week, after much frustration with low-light focusing issues and the light leak from the LCD. So, I decided to wait until the assembly line "matures" a bit before I get another G9. Now after about 3 months I picked up a new one. I didn't trust buying one from the web, I wanted to open the box and see the camera and check out the serial number and so forth before I bought it.

To see my first post on the G9 please visit here:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1010&thread=25032050

Now my journey of buying my 2nd G9 was not smooth. First I was hoping that someone would top the G9 so I wouldn't have to buy another one, as I want a digicam even superior, more like a DSLR sub, but there is no chance of that. Some new cams will be revealed this Jan/Feb, possibly the new Panny LX3, but as we all know the G10 is about a year away and quite frankly it seems to me that most brands are into going after the average consumer with cheaper cams or DSLRs, than a serious enthusiast/pro with more expensive digicams.

So I gave up on looking for a substitute. My next aim was to buy the cam at the cheapest possible retail price and I soon gave up on that too.

Here's a scenario:

Circuit city sells the G9 at a low 429 or so price. I go to the store to get one, which was a real zoo by the way. Really disappointing shopping experience. They have the G9 for 499. So I say can i get this cam at your online price. They say I have to have a printout of their own web site to make this happen. I say, you must be kidding me, you want me to go home and get you a print out of your own web site? She said, go to the comp dept and have them give you a print out. Needless to say, I wasted a good 3 hours there overall, finally I am ready to get the cam, she gives me a new, factory fresh, I check it out and about to pay and I show the print out. Their reply, oh no we can't honor that, a few questions later, she sends to me to a manager who says I should go to customer service. There was a line about 40 people deep at the CS, so I just walked out of the store. You know there is a good chance I won't go back in there again.

Next, I notice that B&H (a local store) is selling the G9 at almost 450, but J&R has it for 436. I call B&H and the CS says of course we'll honor J&R's price come on in. So, in I go and of course they decide not to honor it and I wasted a good 1.5 hours there. For whatever reason, and I could have pressed them because they have a store policy to match reputable pricing, but I said to myself, don't waste your money here, they don't deserve it. Even though I like B&H, they have an excellent selection.

So I went to J&R, got a new G9 at 436, checked it out before I paid for it, plus a secondary battery and Canon case for the G9. Had an amazingly a civilized experience as I know most of the guys there. And left the store with a smile on my face. Good going J&R, without doubt my favorite electronics store in the NYC.

Needless to say, I am a happy camper again, as I do like this camera very much.

So, those of you who remember, with my G9 1.0 I decided to use a Pelican 1040 case, to use as a solid, weatherproof case. A few of you liked the idea and followed suit. But I noticed that the Pelican 1040 was actually too thin for the G9 and it was putting too much pressure on the camera when closed. Also the 1040 series is not waterproof, it's just water resistant.

So, for the G9 2.0, I am going even more serious. Here it is with Pelican 1120, small but totally waterproof genuine Pelican case. This is some serious case. These Pelican cases actually float if dropped in a body of water and they are basiclaly bulletproof. I am a motorcycle journalist and photographer, so I needed a small, water, shock proof case for the G9 to throw it on the bike as I travel.

Here it is:

Considering the lack of competition I'd say the G9 is currently the king of the hill and I am very happy to have gotten a 2nd one.

Cheers, S

Sorry to hear about your experience at Circuit City. I bought my G9 earlier in the week at CC and it was a great experience. The sales guy was actually pretty knowledgeable about most of the features and some of its IQ limitations. He was not a "more Mp the better" guy. It was priced at $499 as in your case and when I mentioned the online price, the salesman just confirmed the online price himself and that was it. Salesman said it was co. policy to match online price. Seeing as you could have used his computer to order it online with store pick-up, I don't see how they could give you a hassle about price-matching. They also had an added bonus of a free (after rebate) Epson printer which gives pretty good results.

Just goes to show how inconsistent store management can screw up their business.

I bought my G9 at CC for a total of $446 (that's tax included) so total was about $414. The best case I have found is the LowePro D-PODS 50 which is scratch-free waterproof and cushioning wet-suit paterial. It kept my SD550 looking brand new after 2.5 years of use. I got one used at the B&H superstore today for $13 and used it the rest of the day throughout NYC. It is also almost instant access.

You have more patience than I do. :)

With CC indeed all web pickup orders are at the Customer Service desk. They can't ring them up at the regular registers.

Glad you ended up happy with your accessories too.

Enjoy your new camera!

I just bought mine Wed at CC. The only way to go at CC in to buy online with in store pickup. I was literally in the store less than 5 minutes - just the way I like it. BTW, since I am a AAA member, I got an extra 10% off, so my before tax price was $386.

I love my 30D but there are too many times I don't take it because of the hassle. My next chore is to find a slim case that I can wear on my belt. Most of the ones I saw in the store have a big fat front pocket that adds 3/4" or more to the depth. I know it's a little big for the belt but I need to find a minimalist holster, preferably with a velcro flap.

I think you made a good choice to move up to a bigger case. The photo of the 1040 case shows the foam was actually pressing on the lens cover leaves. That does not look like a good thing. Perhaps the foam could be trimmed down a little to relieve the pressure. The width & depth sure looks like a good match, though.

Hi, I agree. I did more research and found that the next size up the 1050 would work pretty well for our cameras, as it's the same width and length as the 1040, but just taller by an inch or so. However in my research I learned that these aren't real Pelican cases. Meaning they aren't as everything-proof as the larger Pelican cases.

Looking at the smallest "real" Pelican '1120' I noticed that it wasn't much bigger than the 1050, and it's completely waterproof and buoyant and also these larger Pelican cases are much more shock and impact proof than the polished smaller ones, lastly they don't cost that much more.

I do have the Canon case for casual transport by the way...

Cheers, S

Not to steal the thread, but I have found that the Mountainsmith Flash medium bag is a great camera only bag for my G9. If you want more room for a spare battery, try the large size. The medium is only big enough for the camera. Flap style top opening with a velcro flap and soft interior. Inside memory pocket as well. Belt attachment or small shoulder strap.

you know, I've seen this before, but the G9 in my hands seem to fit fine, without gluing other things to it. I event bought a pricey Giotto glass LCD protector and as I was trying to put it on, I said to myself, who cares if there is a 0.5% chance that at some point in the future the screen can get scratched up. I don't wanna treat this camera like some people treat their furniture, cover it up with a clear vinyl. I have a Sony digicam that I have taken maybe 30 to 40,000 shots with and hasn't a single scratch on the screen. I am a very careful user.

The grip in your image looks OK, but the fact that you say this camera couldn't be good without it, is the point that I don't agree with. I think it ignores the fact that we have different needs, different sensevities and most important of all different size hands. G9 as is fits me well...

I am about to pick up a new G9 at Circuit City. Questions:

How can I make sure it is the newest version? Serial number?
Someone mentioned AAA discount. I am a member, how do I get it?
Can I still get it with a web purchase with in store pick up?

Go to your club's website. Log in. (you will have to register if you haven't already) Navigate to the Show Your Card and Save area, then to the Circuit City link. You will see a button that says "shop now". You will get 10% off on items $199 or more. Works on online purchases (shipped or store pickup). To me, store pickup is the only way to fly if there is one nearby.

Look at me. i'm a CC fanboy after all these years of hating CC. For that much savings, I'll eat a little crow. Doesn't seem like they have as many high pressure sales peeps as they used to.

... cause I can tell you're just a tad obsessive. Takes one to know one. %^)I completely agree with you regarding add-ons. I just had to add this grip to my G9 as I have fat slightly arthritic fingers that have a hard time with this little mini-brick. I may put the grip on and decide I hate it.

Wow -

I'm just amazed that you put yourself through so much aggrevation just to say that you saved $15 or so. Just how much is your TIME worth? ;-)

hi, the B&H story was mentioned because I like that store and actually wanted to buy the G9 from them, but they blew it, it was the principal of the thing. I live in NYC and it was on a Sunday, so, I had time. But after they confirmed on the phone that they would match J&R's price and then they didn't, I didn't care to buy from them, I basically left the store. I had a great experience shopping at J&R and end up dropping another $$ for a battery and Canon's case both at full retail. So, it wasn't really about money at the end, but how the stores treat you.
