Pigeon

Will this photo was slightly sharpened with the PhotoShop unsharp mask. I also did autolevels. The reason the bird is sharp and the background is blurred is that the background is beyond the depth of field of the lens. It is easy to get this kind of effect with a long lens.

When I took this photo of the pigeon my wife asked, “Why are you
taking a photo of a flying rat?" I replayed that it is a very
pretty bird. What do you think?

Photographed with a Cannon G1 + B-300. Comments and suggestions
are welcome.

This is not a composite shot. Backlighting causes the highlight around the bird. I used to be a lighting designer and take full advantage of my lighting knowledge in my photography. The lighting is natural and was produced by lightly overcast sky.

You are doing very well for a beginner. Start exploring PhotoShop or some other image editor and sharpen the photos (unsharp mask). Also run auto levels to increase the dynamic range in the photos. You will be amassed at the improvements.

In PhotoShop you find autolevels under the image / adjust. Autolevels looks at the whole image and increases the contrast and adjusts the saturation and color. Try it out as most photos improve from this simple tool.

While you took a lovely photo of the pigeon, where's the picture of the half mutilated one that was getting mauled by this pigeon and his buddies?
Visually, bird. Socially, rat.

As for suggestions, I've seen birds and sea anemone, which I've greatly enjoyed, how about one of the wife? ;)

P.S. Re an old post, My mom is enjoying her new A40 and becoming much more technosavy!

I find that autolevels works well for outdoor shots or pics taken in very good lighting. For indoor shots under dim, mixed or poor lighting, autolevels doesn't always produce the desired results. When autolevels doesn't work I usually try Levels or Curves and some of the other adjustments.
