if i had to guess i'd say a dot of oil on the lens. theres a little
bluish on one side, looks like aberations.
looking at the cabinet, i'm wondering what the rainbow is from.

Hey guys--no mystery anymore--after looking at your pics Neal do a search and check out the thread I recommended you find.

We go thru this about every 6mos. on the forum.

Mike--don't guess--Neal is wanting solutions, no way a dot of oil on the lens is gonna do that!

Hi..I read that thread DickS..it was very helpful but I am disturbed by the fact this never occurred with toshiba PDR-M71 I had ..took similar pics in similar locations never saw these aberrations...dust etc...

Mike the rainbow maybe the result of a mirror on the headboard producing a prismatic effect with the light???

Thanks again

I ma concerned as I have not seen this reported in the reviews or by other digicam other than canons so far...I realize my experience is limited but these dust particles screw up really nice pics....

there all so even i'll have to say it's dust on the lens itself. -
or it's the ghost of walt disney - visiting japan of course... :)
I took 2-3 pictures of the same background, and it only showed up
on this one. It's definitely not dust on the lens, most probably
dust in the air.
well assume in the air...

though if you sent that to a ghost forum, and tell them you shot this, and didn't see it when you took the picture, you'll get some pretty funny answers - especially if you said you got a chill from it in some way. - they refer to those as orbs.

it's dust, or pollen, or the like. it could be one of next to impossible dust pieces on the lens, that caught the light in the right way.

depends on how the light hits it. the oil drop would come from the dust that get's on the lens.

in either case it's related to the flash.

in the picture there was no mirror, so that is most likely it.

i'm wondering if some how that the flash is closer to the lens in some way compared to the other camera. and that extra light is causing you to see what the other camera couldn't.

in my camer the flash is over the lens, at about 2-3 inches or so. i can only assume that the flash is bouncing toward the lens in someway...

Neal, I have recorded very similar white circles from my IXUS 300. I don't think its due to dust. I beleive that its a ghost image of the iris that has been generated from some strong specular reflection from the scene itself. These circles don't turn up in every flash shot, but are there often enough to notice them.

Take a look at :

http://www.pbase.com/epgs1/test

The shots 'squash1' and 'squash2' exhibit the same features. Flash was used in both shots. There are several sources of specular reflections in each shot.

I haven't observed this phenomena on any non-flash shots. I am quite sure it is not my finger!

Cheers
Graham

i always forget the IS part. it's a little bulky, but it's nice to have a built in 10x zoom. my next camera needs to have this and more, so it will probably be a little while.

Neil:

After reading the many responses on this thread - some have hit it right on the nose and helped me express what I have seen in ten or more S100 and S110 powershots. Always with flash - random - almost perfect circles - varying sizes from very small to dime size. After four or five different cameras, it became clear that it was inherent in the camera. I thought it was power related, but thought it was power coupled with the jpg compression of the image. After reading this later posts on this thread, I now believe it is, as suggested, a reflection of the iris - and, since it only happens with the flash, having to do with the speed of either the iris opening or closing as affected by the drain on the power.

This is just my own humble speculation (MOHS) and I wouldn't want to represent it as anything more than that, but it does meet my empirical observations of at least six different powershots and more than minimal time pondering the causes.

I have had very few shots that I could not correct in Adobe Photoshop using the clone tool. With the new healing tool, the job should be made that much easier.

Hope this adds to the emerging pool of information.

I think the suggestion about the iris is right on( the circle is perfectly round)....It is all to common and I can not imagine dust being such a constant cause....besides I would guess almost all users of digicam would complain...this is a very big problem in my opinion...the canon is nice camera but far to many indoor flash pic have this problem

One interesting thing I noticed is with shutter sound on it was more frequent than when it was off..I took like 30 pic of the same bedroom with shutter sound off...probably my imagination and I was pointing away from an area where a reflection is possible...

for $500 this ruins too many pics...as Isaid the toshiba PDR-M71 did not produce this effect but like all digica mthere are trade off..color is not as good as canon but close....and it is butt ugly with a stupid lens cap...

Do you think changing the ISO or some other setting will get rid of these white circles or reduce therre frequency
