Well I finally did, i bought my very first DSLR and damn is it a nice feeling. I have the battery charging now (Should be done within 30 min) so all I did now was get the strap on the camera. I bought the 40D 28-135 Kit

Here's the break down on my deal.

The other day, my wife and I got the Reward Zone coupons in the mail, 10% off any single item. I checked to see if my local Best Buy had any in stock which they didn't but should get them in soon. I called them yesterday and said they might have some, they put me on hold to check and low and behold they have 2 just coming off the truck. I asked if they could hold one for me till tomorrow and they said yes!

Woohoo, here is where the savings starts to come in.

Giant Eagle, our local (local to Ohio and PA) grocery store has a thing called fuel perks. You buy items and/or gift cards you rack up fuel rewards. For every $50.00 you spend, you get .20 cents off a gallon of gas. You have 90 days to redeem them but as you buy more items you rack up more fuel perks, it's a rolling 90 days, FIFO.

They sell probably 35-50 different gift cards and Best Buy just happens to be one of them. I went yesterday to buy $1500.00 worth of gift cards to earn fuel rewards. I ended up with $6.00 off a gallon of gas up to 30 gallons. What I don't use on my first 30 gallon fillup, I will use on the next few. I also have a few 6 gallon gas jugs that I will fill up to make sure I get my 30 gallons worth of free gas each time. Depending on the price of gas, I will get at least $180.00 in free gas but probably more. Since I have a 2006 Silverado with a 26 gallon tank this works out perfect.

Now on to today.

I went to Best Buy to buy my 1st DSLR, the Canon 40D. They had it on hold and when I went to go pay for it I told them I was a Reward Zone member and had a 10% off coupon. It just happens that the 40D kit is on sale this week for $1423.99. I gave them the 10% off coupon and that brought it down to $1281.59. Add in 6.5% sales tax and I got it for $1364.86.

So lets break down the savings:

Canon 40D regular price - $1499.99

On sale Price - $1423.99

Take 10% off - $1281.59

Out the door - $1364.86 (with tax)

So if you figure I also get at least $180 in free gas, and got the camera for $1364.86, I saved a grand total of at least $412.00

Not too bad for doing a little leg work with the gift cards.

I also bought the 4 year service plan for $139.99. Since this was my first DLSR, I didn't want to take the chance and at the very least, in a few years I can get a new battery under warranty so I will get some of it back if nothing goes wrong.

Wish me luck, this is a big step up from my Sony 828. I'll be posting my results later in the week.

I didn't know that the battery was covered under their 4 year service plan. Good news.

I'm not sure if you get a 10% coupon the day you sign up but you get them in the mail every 6 weeks.

After using my 40D for a few days, I think I'm going to buy the 17-85mm IS lens, the 28-135mm IS lens isn't wide enough for indoor shots.

L Lenses would be nice, but a lot of $$$$

I still have to figure out how to get decent low light/no flash indoor pics.

BB doesn't know anything about cameras. There was a write up in the D200 forum about problems with warranty from retailers.

If something goes wrong, they won't be able to fix it. They will send it to someone else, the delay will be atrocious, they will be incompetent, etc. They aren't going to send it to Canon, you can be sure about that.

You sir, are an idiot.....I dare you to attempt to find out how many cameras, DSLRs included, Best Buy switches out on a monthly basis due to warranty work. Best Buy uses precision camera for warranty work.

A few weeks back, I picked up one of those 10% moving coupons for BB at the Post Office. I was this close to buying the 40D kit (MSRP - 10%), but of course that coupon didn't take 'cause DSLR excluded.

anyway, I was offered the same 4YR warranty, BUT I highly recommend opting for the $169/4YR plan which gives you accidental coverage! 4YR accidental coverage warranty costs much more anywhere else. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind. Don't forget it's transferable, adds a lot of value when you sell it!

FWIW, I had a fried iPod w/BB extended warranty. BB Fixed it in a week (entire main board replaced). Friend had iPod, BB fixed 3 (or 4?) times, finally they issued him BB store credit for the original price. With that, he bought the current iPod and had money left over!

You forgot to include the Reward Zone certificates you'll get in your deal calcluation. Should be around $40. I bought mine 2 weeks ago and got triple points (or $120) plus 12% off and 6 months same as cash when I used my BB credit card.

The only bad thing is that I haven't been able to get out and shoot anything yet.

That is a great deal. I got my 40D at Best Buy too and though it is not as great a deal as yours, I feel I did pretty well.
So I am feeling your joy. I love this camera and I know you will too.

I got the 4 yr warranty also on my 30D. They will back up their warranty, they proved that to me already. BestBuy pricing is average but their customer service and warranty policy is top-notch in Miami, Fla.

Hopefully I won't need to use my extended warranty and if I do, Best Buy won't screw me.

Does anyone know if I can cancel my extended warranty if I chose to and get a partial refund?

You can cancel the warranty up to 30 days after for a full refund. But seriously, I'd consider keeping it. It's cheap insurance, and adds value if you decide to sell. Plus, that guy that had a bad experience with his D200 camera dealt with it for 22 days and got a D300 replacement for free. So, it's not THAT bad. You just got to be firm if/when you need to utilize it.

I bought the $169 PSP/Accident warranty for 4 years. It's $42.25/year, Don't eat out 1 time each year, you paid for your warranty and peace of mind.

BTW, good deal on the camer. It's so sexy.

FWIW, Best Buy and Circuit City have been good to my uncle when he need to use the extended warranty. Never a hassle with his claims. Hopefully we get the same royal treatment. Just remind them how much money you spent (and will spend in the future) on their equipment in good faith.
