Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS or Canon 70-200mm f/4.0L USM for $10 more? The reviews I've read favor both lenses. I'm tempted to go for the 70-300 for the IS factor alone, but am not 100% convinced. I will be using the lens with my 40D.

My dilemna too (see earlier posts), sending the 1st one back though and replacement in post. Hope its better.

I had the same dilemma this time last year - went for the 70-200 f4L and don't regret it. Wonderful lens, pin sharp even wide open, deep rich colours and lightning AF. My only reservation is the white colour, which tends to attract attention. I've just today received a Kenko Pro 300DG 1.4x teleconverter (bought cheap from HK on eBay) to use at the long end. Early indications are that the TC lowers the contrast a bit too much for my liking at 280mm, but then I understand that the 70-300 also suffers from loss of contrast at the long end. The L zoom doesn't have IS of course, but it balances beautifully on the 40D. Needs good light or a mono/ tripod, though.

Good luck with your decision.

Whatever lens I choose, it will compliment my 28-135 IS. I am slowly getting back into photography and will be using the lens for shooting animals while at the zoo or while on vacation. I will use it as my son gets older to shoot him playing sports, etc.
What will the lens primary be used for?

IMO, having used both lenses, I think the 70-200 f/4 is superior to the 70-300IS (Build quality, IQ, focusing, speed). The 70-300 is still a very good lens. IS is great to have on any lens.

That being said, I think you will be better off with the 70-300. Given you are happy with your 28-135, you will find the 70-300 to be a great fit. I think you will appreciate the added range from 135-300 as opposed to 135-200. Also it is smaller and lighter for travel.

Unless you have plans on selling your 28-135 for a 17-85/17-55 or IQ/build quality is top priority, then the added focal distance + IS would be my choice.

It is a tough choice, but I have to vote for 70-300. The IS system is too useful to pass up, and if you plan to do anything wildlife/sports, that extra 100mm of reach is VERY useful.

I have the DO version of the 70-300, and enjoy it.
