No S5 Icon on the desktop

I've never had my S5 icon show up on my desktop (MacBookPro 10.4.10), but Lightroom recognizes the camera when it's plugged in so I never worried about it. I usually use the card reader, but last night I checked and LR still recognizes and will download from the camera when connected. The S5 icon does not appear and FujiFinePix doesn't seem to recognize the cameras presence either.

The only reason I care, is that I want to upgrade my firmware, and without that Icon I can't load the new version onto the camera. I don't want to do it via the card reader.

Anyway, I re-installed the disc that comes with the S5, followed the directions exactly, and still no good. Did that twice actually.

Any suggestions? Unfortunately I won't have time to call customer support today. I was hoping to have the upgrade for a job on Saturday... maybe I'll just shoot my flash through a green gel! I am so sick of this RED!

I've never had it show up either. I don't think Fuji enabled a direct disk (mass storage) access to our cameras. You'll need to buy a card reader. I picked up a SanDisk Firewire 800 CF card reader for like $70. Warning! Always eject the CF card, if in the SanDisk reader, properly (i.e. drag the icon to the trash or Apple+E) or else the CF card will be rendered unreadable. I've had this happen to me several times when I got lazy and yanked the card out the reader.

This "folder" access to the camera card's contents works on PCs, but not very well. I think it's a PC driver issue.

To resolve this problem, I wonder if it would be possible to remove (uninstall) the Fuji driver and re-install it?

The D-200 Icon doesn't show up either ....

teh Nikon software opens up I think the camera is a one way device ... you need to put the upgrade on a card and hold down some certain button combo and ..hold your...breath
is'nt there a FAQ on the download page ....

It is hard to explain WHY S5 do not show on the desktop, S3 did (unless having HU was allowing this?). S3 was using Firewire, perhaps this is why I could access it on the Mac. Using any other software to download images is with out of any good merit. Any way you can connect S5 and using posted by Fuji software transfer firmware update to the card, (I went “safe” way and used XP for that) than update firmware.

I would just like to add .. fellow mac user ....there is a new LR update:

Go here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=3810&fileID=3546

then go here to download a .nef file from the D3

http://www.mannyphoto.com/nikonD3/

my CS2 could not open it but the new LR will ;) and so will Nikon View 6 .. that I try to never use and I haven't updated my Capture NX yet but it's looking like the Nikon software will be better.. good thing it's coming with/D3 D-300

SEE : this is a ISO 6400 shot .. looking good.... this will be the S5 upgrade path

Did you happen to notice they got rid of the sliders in LR WTF? WHY? did they have to go mucken around with that?

Well folks,

Take it granted that the S5 icon never will show up on the desktop. Neither with nor without HU. I am hot mad about this and never have understood why Fuji did not include this feature with the S5. My only guess too is the lack of Firewire. I is so handy with the S3, plug it in double click on the icon and get down to business immediately. I hate with the S5 that first you need to import the images into your library via FinePix Viewer, then you can see what to keep and what not, then you can get down to business with HU. I do not know why but, I just can't find out how to get the images into HU without going through FinePix Viewer. Any advise is appreciated. my favourite way of checking the crop, taken with the S3, is browsing through the disc image via Bridge, then copy the keepers into the appropriate storage folder. Once that is done the card can be initialised immediately. I was stunned to find out that My S5 is not as user friendly. With the S5 you have to take the long route to weed out the images.

Best to all,
AIK

Hi Dennis,

The easiest way to upgrade your firmware is by copying it directly to your CF card via a reader and reinserting the card in the camera and follow instructions. The site is a little confusing, there's a utility that you can download with the firmware too, so make sure that its the firmware that you copy to your card.

But if you don't have a reader you can use that utility to upload the firmware to the camera, don't worry about in mounting on the desktop.

So David, the utility supplied by Fuji will locate the camera and transfer the Upgrade?

Seems a little sketchy. I like the idea of using the CF card... I guess I won't do it for my job tomorrow, too risky should something go wrong.

Gotta fly, more later.

Wait, wait, wait... what do you mean they did away with the sliders? Did they take the sliders out of the Developer Module? That can't be can it?

The editing module never had them that I'm aware of. I've been using it since November last year.

Please check the Dev. Module and tell me the sliders are still there...

So David, I have the card reader, do I simply copy to the card, insert card in camera and then proceed with the in camera upgrade instructions on the Fuji site?

Have you done this?

Dennis,

See my answer to your other thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1020&message=25635594

I have done just what ddk said and it works. Just be sure you copy the upgrade file to a folder (I use a download folder) MAKE SURE THE FILE SIZE IS THE VERY SAME AS THE FILE SIZE IN THE DOWNLOAD SITE THIS IS IMPORTANT. and then copy the contents to a newly formatted CF card. Then follow the instructions on the download siite.
