I just received my Nikon 990 and was looking for a good quality mini tripod. The local camera store (charlottecamera.com) recommended the Bogen 3007 kit. It seems very sturdy and has an extension that can be added to it to reach a height of about 24+ inches, or without the extension the tripod can go as low as 3 inches off the table. It runs about $60.

Any suggestions or recommendations of places online to get this tripod cheaper.

Specifically it is a Bogen Manfrotto 3007 kit (US, 345 for international).

Anyone have this, or know how it compares to the Slik mini-pro? Is it worth the extra money compared to the Cobra-pod (Qpod) that I have seen heavily recommended on this site?

I have the Bogen 3007 and their Mini Ball Head (3009), 3D head (3025), Tilt Head (3232) and also the 6"-10" Extension. It all fits in a pocket of my camera bag and works very well, the 3D head is quite useful. The effective height range is about 4.5 " to 14.5". The quality is very good. However, this is a small table-top tripod and stability becomes an issue even at 14.5", I do not think adding extensions to 24+ inches is wise with this tripod, its really not designed for that.

If you are looking for an excellent small tripod of conventional design, check out the Velbon Mini-F. It is stable, very adjustable and has a range of about 8" to 24 ". I have been very pleased with mine.

A good selection of small tripodes can be found at:
