Canon G2, S10, and some old-fashioned scanned film photos. Not all pics will have intrinsic artistic value as they are just a personal record of memories but some I hope you will find interesting.

Geesh folks--get out there and vote. No, I did not vote for myself. But it is ridiculous a few people have voted. I mean 50 entries and only 7 votes--that's not too good. Click on the thumbnail size to get a good preview--then if things are a toss up, then start clicking on the larger sizes that there are links to. Vote, Vote, Vote!!!! rah, Rah, Rah!!! Go out and vote lest this board should FALL!!!! Ok it rhymed--so go to the link and VOTE.

Geesh! Is it really that bad to vote for your own photo? If you really like one of your entries that much then what's so wrong with giving it a vote? You don't have to be vain to actually think that you took a good picture. feeling guilty now

Basically the reason why we don't vote for our own entries, is because it basically cancels out. If everyone voted for themselves then each entry would have one vote, that would be the same as if no one voted at all.

BUT. we each have 3 votes.

That is kind of interesting though. Do you think that everyone thinks one of their own pictures is better than the rest? Maybe everyone should get one vote just for effort and encouragement.

The way that I picked my votes was to look for pictures that I would want to frame (if I knew the subject) I also gave extra consideration for dealing with a background (which not many did), but ok. If there's some unwritten rule then I guess I'll play along. :o) I can see the practical side, but I still don't think it means someone is vain.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would be possible to change the way the voting works? I kinda like the way the voting works at this site: http://www.dpchallenge.com

You vote on all the images by giving them a score from 1-10. I personally think this would give more accurate ratings since everyone will get a score from an average of the total votes, and will also be easier on the voters since we won't have to completely weed out a bunch of equally excellent photos in favour of only 3! i.e. "Image x = 8/10, image y = 6/10, image z = 10/10, etc."

What do you guys and gals think?

I like the idea of rating on a scale. The one thing that I don't like (not that the current system is much better) is having all of the entries ranked in order from best to worst after the voting. I feel like that might discourage people from participating. Noone wants to be last.

As it stands, there end up being several photos without votes and you can just blame it on the 3 vote system.

I'm not exactly sure how to avoid that. Perhaps only show the rating for the top photos or allow the person who submitted the photo to see their rating without making it public. I dunno.

I have not heard one word from Will (aka Sub). Margaret sent him a scathing e-mail, but she hasn't heard a thing either. Too bad, I really liked that site.

Those suggestions might work, but I'd personally like to know exactly what my ranking was, even if it was the very lowest. Coming in last is a risk one takes with everything, and should be taken as a lesson in how to improve, not as discouragement. But that's just me. ;)

Perhaps what we could do is just post the scores individually in order of posting, and let the people figure out their ranking themselves if they want, rather than ranking all of them in order (maybe just highlight the top 3)?

First of all the whole reason behind voting is really to pick a successor. The challenges is not really about who can take the best picture. Rather they are more of an excerise. They are designed to get you to try new things and explore many aspects of photography and your camera. This is why I am forever incouraging newbies to do the challenges.

Furthermore, this is why I think it would be better to allow comments on the photos. This would allow submitters to get some sort of feedback for their work. If they get it early enough they might be able to improve their picture before the voting actually begins. This is kind of the reason why I created the critique gallery.

I too really like the comments...that's the best part about this whole thing, although they tend to be only positive comments in the voting booth (since we only comment on our favourite 3). My biggest problem with the current system is that it makes the voting more difficult and time-consuming, which further discourages people from voting. Also, since we only get to vote for 3 images, many great shots don't get any votes so it appears that no one likes them, when in fact they could have come in 4th place for every voter!

My idea for an ideal voting process would be to have a long list of all the thumbnails (and links to the full image), each with their own box for comments and score (using radio buttons?), so the voters can quickly go through and rank/comment on all of the shots after browsing through the PBase gallery.

As a "returnee" to photography as a hobby, and reasonable new to the digital world, I find the challenges as Clifton described - an exercise to try new things and explore new techniques. As for the voting, I don't really care - except to see the comments on why someone liked a particular photo. I generally learn something then. I also like the critique gallery for the same reason, as long as the comments offer constructive advice.

I would recommend against a voting system that ranked all the photos. I am sure that would deter entries from some of the more sensitive folks. And we don't want that.

In a voting system like we currently use, you will get a better distribution of votes if you give everbody one vote for every 10 pictures entered. Thus, for 72 pictures entered, you get 7 votes. This will produce a top 10, as well as leave a number with 0-1 votes, so there will be no one "last".
However, this puts a little more work on the one writing the voting software.

I don't think it is too terrible voting for your own pictures, but like Clifton said, if we all voted for our own three entries, it would be a bit of a dull competition :)

Two of my entries I've already got framed and on my desk. I just print them out and swap them into a frame so I have new pictures every now and then (and no - neither of them are the self portraits!)

I'm the same - I do these various challenges because it gives me an incentive to try some new technique or approach. I don't think the voting is really about the 'glory' of having the 'best' picture. After all, it's only on an internet site...

The comments are by far the most useful part, and I especially like it when I get a lot of conflicting opinions about what people/ like don't like about my pictures. Then maybe I start thinking I'm doing something right.

Is it just me, or does the guy in the excellent 'Kashgar Market' picture look like George Bush working undercover ?
