40D + NHL: Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

can i get similar shots if i use 28-135 lense...could you tell what
settings to use for NHL shotings
IMHO, I don't think that lens will work very well. Even assuming you have decent seats somewhat close to the rink, you'll need every bit of the long end of that lens (120mm - 135mm), and at that focal length, your lens has a max aperture of f/5.6, which is 2 stops slower than my f/2.8 lens. This lens tends to be a little soft at 135mm as well. Everything else being equal, that means you would be shooting at ISO3200 with a shutter speed of 1/500s. But try it out and see, you would probably get some decent shots, but I would be surprised if many of them would be very sharp with that lens. I could be wrong, but I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic.

I would definitely be interested in your results. :o)

Bryan,

Not sure if you can find it in any of the PSE programs, but probably not. I just checked my ancient PSE 2, and verified that it's not there. The next best thing is

ENHANCE > ADJUST COLOR > COLOR CAST

but there is no slider to undo the effect to the degree you want, and no other adjustments. I would check for ths 'color cast' feature in the version of PSE that you have, and see if it's there, and if it has any added features.

Tim
Thank you very much for the email with the tips. Unfortunately, I
don't have CS2 or CS3, I only have PSE 5.0 at the moment. I also have
Ulead's PhotoImpact 12, which I think has a better WB control set
than PSE 5.0. Do you know if PSE 5.0 has the Image~Adjustments~Match
Color menus you referenced in your email to me? What about the new
PSE 6.0? I've thought about buying that one.

I have found that each NHL arena has a different policy regarding cameras. I've run into it a few times here in Dallas.

The AAC policy in Dallas is no lens longer than 4 inches. I complied with that during the All-Star game last year using the 70-300mm DO lens (I used 1600 ISO BTW).

The next game I was stopped and forced to check it in because the policy is 4 inches fully extended (not mentioned on the website). I polled a number of sites and sent an email to the AAC management. Almost 9 months later and no reply.

As a season ticket holder, I am more than a bit disappointed in the rules enforcement as well. I notice people with no press passes with much longer lenses each night and even a couple of video cameras at the last couple of games (which are strictly forbidden).

I guess the floor makes a really big white balance card. Are their any rules there about bringing in cameras?
In the last year I started shooting indoor hockey myself. My best
advise is to use a custom white balance... Manually focus on the ice
and take a photo. Then use that photo for your custom white balance.
It take about 10 seconds to do and works very well.

Yeh, apparently so. :o)

See my response to idarknight. I explain it all there. Apparently, many hockey arenas have different rules.

I had called ahead and gotten permission from the Oilers Public Relations manager, but nothing in writing - he said that it would be ok - so sure enough it was ok at the door, but not "on the floor".

If I get any tickets this year, I'll certainly try to "book" my camera in advance.

In the end I think they are more worried about you making money from the pictures than anything else.

I hear you on this one. After my experience with the Florida Marlins
games at Dolphin Stadium, I was smart enough to contact the Event
Manager of the arena two weeks ago in anticipation of having a
problem and getting her to send me an email approval for my specific
camera and mounted lens. I brought a copy of the email letter with me
to the game last night and I definitely needed it, as I was stopped
at the gate because of the camera. After they reviewed the email
letter from their "boss", I proceeded in.
Thanks for the info, and nice to see a fellow Floridian on here! I'm surprised to hear you had a tough time at a Marlins Game. I've brought my Sony H5 and 40D in there without any problems. They're usually just happy to have people attending the game. :)

I'm looking forward to shooting at a Panthers game in the near future. It will be a test for my 70-200 f/4. I don't think I'll get the results I'm looking for, but I guess we'll see. Was it a hassle to get email approval from the Event Manager?

Hi Tritonman,

Good to hear from another South Floridian as well. I never had a problem getting my 30D/40D into the games, it was the lens that always gave them fits. I always had my 200 f/2.8L + 1.4x TC attached. Dolphin Stadium has an 8" lens limit that they strictly enforce. They see me coming with that lens combo and they stop me and say, "your lens is too big, you can't come in here with that". Then I would whip out my plastic 12" ruler and show them that the lens combo was only 7" long, 1" less than their limit. Next thing out of their stunned mouths was, "Enjoy the game". I went to six games over the summer, and every time I was challenged at the gate. That's why I started bringing a plastic ruler.

You will probably be in ISO3200 territory if you want at least 1/1000s shutter speed. When I was shooting at ISO1000 and f/2.8, I was getting 1/1000s. You may can get away with ISO1600 and 1/800s at f/4, which might still work OK.

It was easy getting email approval from the Event Manager. She was very friendly and helpful. If you want her info, send me a private email from my profile, and I'll forward it to you. :o)

lol, ahh, i see. A ruler, just one more thing to add to the camera bag. I suppose the 8" rule applies to Dolphin games as well?

Those are pretty much the numbers I had figured, which will probably produce decent results. I have a feeling it'll be hit or miss, and the keeper ratio probably won't be very high. I have yet to test the camera at 3200, so it'll be nice to see the results.

That would be wonderful! I'll send you an email this afternoon. By the way, I love your work with FAU football. You've had some incredbile shots. Some of the best sports work I've seen.

Yeh, it will apply to Dolphins games as well, as it is a stadium policy. Go to Dolphinsstadium.com, then click on "The Stadium" tab at the top, then cursor over to "Stadium Guide" and then click on "Easy Entry Information" in the drop down box.

I can only imagine the difficulty of taking these pictures. I don't follow (on TV) this sport much because I find it very tough to follow the puck that is why I don't bother watching it live. So kudos to you for capturing these excellent shots.

BTW, I am in total agreement with you regarding the 40D's AF speed/accuracy vs. the 1DIIN. The 40D is very, very good but for action, the 1DIIN is still the king!

Cheers,

José
