Will this Seagate Drive work with Mac Pro?

I have the 630 model of the seagate in my G5. Works fine.

It doesn't appear that this is a SATA II drive. Just wondering if this just fits in without any extra adapters.

SATA II is considered a misnomer by the Serial-ATA International Organisation. The official term is "SATA 3.0 Gbit/s" - drives considered SATA-I (also a wrong name) do only offer 1.5 Gbit/s. There is no difference in terminals/connectors.

Why would somebody put a 2.5" drive into a Mac Pro? All Mac Pros use standard 3.5" drives.

You saved me again. I took your other advice about the RAM. I went and got 2 GB (which you said Aperture usually uses), so now I'm running 3gb total. Seems to be doing pretty good.

thanks!

I'd stay away from Seagate hard drives for Mac Pros. They have a firmware bug that limits performance. I posted my personal test data on this last year. I returned the Seagate for a Samsung. Since then I've purchased a WD as well.

Nothing against Seagate, I also purchased a 750 G external FW drive of theirs, but they or Apple never fixed this issue. It has been documented elsewhere too.
Fortunately there are a few good choices out there.

I would recommend the Western Digital. They run quieter and also are "stock" for the Mac Pro. I added a 500 and it works perfect. Try OWC.

According to Macguru's site they have tested seagate drives (retail versions) extensiviely and recommend them from a performance and reliability standpoint for macpros.

You likely had a OEM version with different firmware on it than the standard seagate retial drives come with.

I have 5 seagate 500 and 750 sataII drives and they were perfectly. I also have 2 750gb WD caviar drives that also work very well.

Well, I've done the testing myself using Xbench and posted the results here. Have you? Seagate drives "work"--they just don't work as fast as the other brands on a Mac Pro. Feel free to post your own data that either confirms my finding or contradicts them.

Today Apple released an update that specifically targets Seagate 500G and 750G SATA hard drives. I don't know any other details, nor any post-upgrade performance data (I returned my Seagate drive many moons ago), but it would be great if this fixes the problems I noted earlier.

If you folks out there could run pre/post xBench tests it would be useful for lots of people.

I'm assuming that the 1TB drive was not afflicted with the same problems and that's why the performance was excellent.
