I'm stuck between these 2 flashes...I 've read great things about both here. If its a tie I would lean towards the 285hv since it uses 4 AA batteries and is cheaper.

I would appreciate the thoughts of experienced users here--David

I use both...and it's a toss up...but just remeber...you should get an OFF CAM bracket for the 285....the "worst" place for a flash is on top of that cam attached to the hot shoe.....for several reasons....harsh light...potential of bumping and bending the prism area, etc....--SEMPER FI...

Thanks John...On the 3040 you have no choice there's no hot shoe. How's the battery life on them?

On the vivitar I like the 4 AA batteries to simplfiy battery management (both cam and flash would use sets of four)

On the Sunpak I like the integrated bracket and additional manual modes. I've also heard (from this forum) that the Sunpak has better auto performance.

Not bat at all....then again...I rarely use either one at full power....but you'll be more than happy with either one....my personsal preferance...Sunpak 544...just seems more durable...and I like the sturdy bracket that comes with it...--SEMPER FI...

John,

That's what I was thinking, the vivitar is a massive flash to have a plastic hot shoe mount.

I have the Sunpak 544 and use it with my C-2100.

I don't have any experience of the Vivitar, but other members on this forum like it a lot, and the photographs I've seen with it looks good.

In my opinion the Sunpak has the following advantages:
1) VERY powerful
2) Built-in bracket (saves $20-40)
3) Very versatile auto settings (1/2-f-stop increments; F2.8 to F8 on ISO 100)

4) Full manual adjustments (correlates to about 1/2 f-stop from full power to 1/64th.
5) 90° Tilt; 180° Swivel (can turn facing backwards)
6) Very consistent and accurate auto output.
7) Very fast recycle time (
8) Can strobe up to 5/second (and maybe more)
9) It makes you look professional!
10) Very good battery life (I took over 200 and batteries was still good)

Disadvantages
1) Large size
2) More expensive (maybe)
3) Takes 6 batteries (I charge them 3+3 and has not had any problems)

Look at my pbase galleries - all the flash and fill-in flash pictures were taken with this flash. http://www.pbase.com/spannie
Also look at this threads (if you haven't yet).

If I can sum up why I really like this flash, it is that it does not limit you in any way (i.e. you can adjust the flash to what you want and you don't have to compromize or adapt to the flash), and it is accurate and consistent (i.e dependable).

You can't go wrong with this brute!

Thanks Spannie...you're posts were the reason I'm looking at the 544 in the first place.

Any reason not to go with the 555 other than $$$

you DON'T need the 555......--SEMPER FI...

How much should the 544 cost? I saw it somewhere for over $300, I
think. Is it that expensive?
Barry....
No way....I beleive B&H...about the most reputable place
around.....has them for about $ 120.00...yo uhave some bad info..

SEMPER FI...
Just checked the B&H price....129.95...you might be able to beat it, but B&H are tops in the biz....and so is their customer service..

--SEMPER FI...

Thanks, John! Where I saw the price was on Sunpak's site. It's listed at $309.95 there. I'm more interested in checking this flash out now that I know it's more affordable.

Yes. It is TTL (with the appropriate module = more$). There is no module for Olympus Digital Cameras. So you will not be able to use TTL functionability. Without the TTL there is almost no difference between the 544 and 555. (Guide Number 140 vs 150 is the only difference)--Spannie
