Heard this today: The Nikon D3X will be released in late 2009 and will replace the D3. There will be a FF 24mp sensor with 6fps and a builtin DX mode with 12MP and 10fps.

The Math doesn't add up for the DX crop to be 50% ogf the FF.

...to Canon's announcement (in 2009) that they have corrected the focus problems with the Mark III. ; )

No way, Nikon is gonna keep their photographers wait 2 more years for a high-res FX D-SLR! Yeah, sure there will be a new camera in late 2009; the succesor to the D3 ...

D3x (or whatever will that camera be called ...) will most likely be revealed at the next year's Photokina and available end of 2008/early 2009. There also is a possibility, that it will be introduced at the PMA - bear in mind, that all Nikon has to do, is implement a high-res sensor in the best possible camera body and that's something Nikon already has - with the D3.

So ask yourself one question; why the hell would Nikon need two (more) years to achieve that?

Robert Capa said 'you can never get close enough'. Well, he did.... He also often visited my daily photoblog at http://logatec.blogspot.com/

DX crop on a 24mp FX camera would be 16mp, not 12. I expect that the D3x will be announced in about 1 year, so October to November 2008. I also expect that the D3 and D3x will be in parallel production, meaning the D3x will not replace the D3 it will supplement the line. The simple fact is the current D3 is a sports shooters dream and will probably outsell the D3x when it's released simply because it's good enough for nearly every task.

Actually DX crop on a 24 mp FX sensor is about 10.6 mp. Which is a clue to why the 12 mp FX sensor of the D3 can be so good. At 'only' 12 mp it has 2.25 times more surface area.

...The D#H camera? Nikon usually come out with D#H first before "X".
True, but the specs and obvious targetted clients of the D3 are present D2Hs users.

You may still have a point, as they may develop a faster (?) version for a H derivative, although I personally doubt it.
Nice to see you back :o)

I agree fall of 2009 would be when the Nikon D3X will be released. Why should Nikon release a D3X next year? The Nikon D3 will be in such high demand for all of next year and beyond. You might see a Nikon FF camera next year which cost around $3000 in the midrange.

Nikon have suggested strongly that there will be a higher res version, and that also that they won't use the 'x' or 'h' suffix with the D3 (reported in AP). Whatever they call it, a camera which sits alongside the D3 in the same way the EOS 1Ds line has fitted alongside the 1D makes a lot of sense, and would cost them little to develop. I would expect to see it in 2008, as other threads here have speculated. Even if they can sell lots of 3D's, I'm sure they'd like to take some 1Ds sales as well.

Like the old man said, "there you go again..."
...The D#H camera? Nikon usually come out with D#H first before "X".
Nope, sorry, wrong again. You really should look some of this stuff up first. A quick scan of the Nikon section of Phil's "Camera Database" (left hand top on your screen) shows otherwise.

Really, the indication is that, eight years later, the pattern is only now starting to repeat. When was the last time there was a non-x-or-h camera? The D1. What happened two years later? A simultaneous D1h and D1x. Then, Nikon got extremely busy gearing up to reinvent the consumer-through-prosumer levels. Brought out the D100 as a parting shot. Upgraded the D1h, then set off the D70 bomb. Introduced the D2x when partner Sony had a 12mp sensor to go into the basic pro body. Upgraded to D2hs to try to keep things fresh while they are hammering away at the high-volume line. D70s, D50, D80, D40 all while making do with a D2xs iteration. Finally, the pattern resets with a D3.

So what was the D1? It was a reinvention of the digital market. While first Kodak and then Canon were trying to work from the top down, Nikon put an affordable pro camera out there that started the migration from film. A product that disrupted the established market.

So what is the D3? Nikon's best shot at another disruptive product. And according to the pattern, a model which will do double duty for a while, and then split into two more specialized approaches.
