Canon 70-200IS $1640!!!

although I have a number of fine L lenses, that lens has become my favorite. It seems to be my "sweet spot" for focal length and due to the fact it is so darn fast on either of the D series or the 1D, that it is a pleasure to use. Not to mention the utter sharpness and color it puts out. Enjoy!!!!

I paid $1250 for the old 70-200L. I had hoped the new one would be priced similarly. Looks like I'll stick with the old one for a while.

Me Too!!

I can hardly believe I am willing to do it, but I have it on the 1D all the time now...had to buy a new camera bag for it(Lowepro Top Loader).

Do you all own the 100-400L as well? In practice how does it stack up against the 70-200L as far as sharpness?

Thanks!

Linda

Between 100-200mm the 70-200 2.8IS has the edge, but by using a 1.4xII telconverter or the 2xII teleconverter the 100-400L has the edge in overall sharpness. Consider the F stop advantage too though. They make an excellent pair to have around. I wouldn't be without either frankly. They both have their strengths and times to use.

Yuri,

What Warranty Card came with it? I purchased a 550EX flash from them, thinking it was gray-market. It came with an International Warranty Card that indicated the countries where the warranty was honored. The United States and Canada WERE both on the list. What did you get with the 70-200 IS?

Thank you for your opinion :) Is it possible to use the 1.4xI (as opposed to 1.4xII) teleconverter with the 100-400L? My use of this combo would be for shooting birds and wildlife.

Thanks,

Linda

Well, if Ritz cannot deliver my D60 on the 4/18 date I will be getting this lens instead and wait for the next Dxx or xD.

I currently have a Sigma 70-200 2.8 which I use mainly for ice hockey and was looking to upgrade for sharpness purposes. I generally am shooting at 200mm anyway, so which do you think is sharper, the Canon 70-200L, 70-200L IS or straight 200L? Since the prime is less than $700, I could probably afford it A LOT easier!

Of course the prime is sharper...but the zoom is very, very good. While the IS's have more elements, Canon works very hard on their designs to keep them equivalent to their older generation non-IS models so any difference you might notice is as much a result of lens to lens variance as from the actual design.

Isn't the prime also f2.8?

Don't lose sight of the fact that the IS will get you two steps in shutter speed. The IS lenses are most often touted in terms of two f-stops. However, the capability will get you the equivilent of two stops, two steps, or can even bring you down two levels of ISO (selection). It can also give you a combination of up to one increment each of any two of the above. (ex. one stop and one level of ISO).

I use a monopod for ice hockey and heard IS is not meant for using a tripod or monopod. My Sigma 70-200 is 2.8 and what I was wondering is how much sharper an image I would get using a Canon 200L 2.8 prime.
