We all know the new kid has a little more noise, but my oh my does the G9 take great looking pictures.

Most of these were taken in very very poor midmorning light at a local farmer's market.

The camera is a dream to use, a real shooter's instrument.

I hope you enjoy your G9 as much as I'm enjoying mine! Your photos are excellent, nice & sharp with good color. Made me hungry - they look very real!

Hi Maria,

Thanks for the kind words. I certainly do like my G9. At first, I felt that they had made a big mistake by not reintroducing the prominent grip of the G6, but after a few weeks of use I think I prefer the more streamlined form factor of the G9. It is much easier to get in and out of the case.

Also, thanks for the info on the "right" name in the other thread!!!

Cheers.

Very impressive!

I've been using my G9 for a few days now, and not sure I'll keep it, though your shots really show what the camera is capable of.
Would you post the settings for ea of the shots?

I find the color accuracy lacking, though now that I've set the custom WB (using white paper - the dealer was out of gray cards) I find the color much more accurate.

Thx

Jim, all were very good showing the strength of the G9, but the one I wish I had taken was Bracklesham Bay. (Taken with your G6) One of those right place, right time, right camera and right photographer.

Thanks. I have never seen a sky like I saw the day we spent at Bracklesham Bay looking for marine fossils. The clouds were angry, with bits of blue in between, and the brownish colour of the sand complimented the tone of the angry clouds. The pics came out looking almost 3D in nature. I think that was a once in a decade day for light.

Your sig picture isn't too shabby either!

Thanks for the kind words.

The exif info is embedded in each picture, just click on the "Full Exif" control under the picture display on pbase.

The other camera settings were:

White balance: Auto

In "My Colours" I set "Custom Colours" as follows:

Contrast -1 click
Sharpness at centre line, no change from default
Saturation -1 click
Red centre line, no change from default
Green centre line no change from default

Blue +1 click - I find that DIGIC III cameras bias the colour too much toward the amber side of the curve.
Skin Tone centre line, no change from default.

These are my default colour settings and I rarely change them.

Also, I spot metered the scene in each picture until I had the histogram I wanted (love the live histogram function) and then I used exposure lock and recomposed the scene and took the picture. This sounds complicated but it is pretty instinctive once you become familiar with the camera and its controls.

In brighter sun I sometimes put the "Blue" setting to +2 clicks and then warm the picture up a bit in PS or Picasa. The posted pictures were post processed in Picasa only with a little boost to contrast, a little desaturation, and a little warming of the colour temperature -- about a five second tweak per picture.

Don't despair, I have never had a camera that produced a picture that was perfectly colour balanced right out of the camera using the default settings. Colour is very subjective and personal. Every digital picture benefits from post processing. Also, you need to experiment with the various settings on the camera. Including my dslr's I have never used a camera that produces a better pic out of the camera than the G9, and the degree of photographic control you have in such a manageable package makes it a real winner for me.

Let us know how you do.

Cheers.

Jim,

You shots posted at pbase are just super.......take away the shooting data and we would never be able to guess which "box" you used.....but your "eye" is apparent throughout ...... once again proof that the camera does not make the shot.....but one does appreciate a clever machine....I have enjoyed my "flawed" G7 very much....;-)

Are your G9 shots jpgs.... opps .....I think I can answer my own quetion...if you are using Picasa I guess this answer must be yes.....

have you used RAW work flow at other times.....?
