DA* 16-50 from Adorama - Anyone received one?

Nope - I am still waiting and glad I wasn't holding my breath till I get it - I have recently been told by Adorama that they expect them soon from the supplier.

To be exact "Your Pentax lens is currently on nationwide backorder. It is expected to be released soon." on October 19th.

I'd agree with all but the part about the distortion at the wide end being within reason. It seemed almost fisheye like to me, but that depends on how you use it to some extent. It also had a bit more CA than I'd care for, but it was really the distortion that caused me to send it back. The 14 is not as sharp, that's true, but it is better corrected even though it is wider and has a little less CA.

I am often puzzled by comments about a lens in terms of color in the digital age. If your white balance is properly set, how much of a concern is that really? Are there differences in the range of color a particular lens can show? I know my DA70 tends toward a warmer rendition than my FA43, but using my Expodisc and shooting raw I can correct to the point that you shouldn't be able to tell them apart. Of course if you're shooting JPG and using AWB, I suppose that's another matter.

I suspect that Adorama is shipping around the $750 orders and filling the ones at the newer price of $899.

As far as a nationwide backorder is concerned... If you want one really bad, and are willing to pay $899, Calumephoto.com has as many of them in stock as you want to buy for $899.

And, I know this how? I purchased mine from Calumet on Thursday 10/25 and it shipped the same day.

So they're out there if you're willing to pay for them. Or, you can continue to wait for Adorama, & others, who took your order @ $750 to continue to ship around you with the orders they received at the higher price.

Just my $ .02

I have criticized Adorama for their problems shipping new Pentax gear, but in this case I believe you are treating them unfairly. Adorama still does not list the DA* 16-50 F2.8 on their web site, so they cannot be taking orders for it at any price. They are still filling backorders at the $750 price.

Could be that I'm being unfair. Just seems a bit strange that I can pick up the phone and order one, and get immediate shipment, from a company who sells about 5% of the amount of Pentax gear that Adorama does.

But, back in the 70s, I worked for a mail order/retail audio/video store and it was policy that when a shipment of any "hot" item came in, 10% of it was designated to fill back orders and the balance went on the shelf or was used to fill new mail orders.

This may not be the case, but........

While Adorama is frequently inept, everyone who has dealt with them seems to agree that they are an honest business.

I suspect that Adorama got a zillion orders for the lens at their very low price. Then Pentax put out word that they would have trouble producing the lens. At that point, Adorama took down their listing for the lens and haven't put it back up.

As to whether Adorama has any of these lenses for sale over the counter, that is a legitimate question. Perhaps a list member in NY could check that for us. If it is true, then Adorama merits your criticism.

Your odds of getting a "primo" copy increases as your wait increases... hopefully

You guys should check with 6ave.com, a store in NY. Thats where I got mine after checking all the popular companies. Actually call to see if they have it in stock to avoid any surprises. They shipped pretty promptly.

According to Adorama, mine was shipped yesterday. I guess it'll arrive by the middle of next week.

Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to shoot this year and probably wont until spring. :-O

Robert,

What month did you submit your order? I'm just curious where they
are at in fulfilling orders. Thanks.

I ordered the 16-50 back in June and just received my UPS shipping info. Should be here in 3 days :) The $749 + shipping was the price charged to my c.c.

I have had one on order from Adorama at US$750 for some time - has
anyone received on or been informed of dispatch of their order yet?

Deathly silence for me so far :(

Just got my notice of dispatch of the lens about 9 hours ago.

Have got to say they just made it - I was getting superclose to canceling and going to 17th Street Photo who were showing the same pricing as my original order but who have considerably dearer shipping costs to Oz. They have had the lens in stock for at least a couple of weeks.

Still, I know and have used Adorama b4 and I have liked their service attitude - pleased they made it :)

Not really - was getting thoroughly p* d with the delay but the kit lens met most of my midrange needs as it is more than passable with reasonable apertures (not wide open) so I just waited :((

If I was a pro I would not have been so patient though.

--I still think you have the patience of Job. I have been waiting for some time for the long DA*'s but I have not paid for them and they haven't been available for several months:(

I do hope it meets your expectations when finally arrives.

I guess you will let us all know when it has:))
