USED Nikon DSLR and Lens price list...DON'T GET SCAMMED...USA Prices. We'll call this a suggested guide for folks seeking used gear. I don't sell gear nor am I affiliated with anyone who does.

These are prices you should be paying! It should be assumed that you MIGHT get a few extras in these details to sweeten them...batteries, memory, bags and so on. Remember to calculate savings on used gear based on your TOTAL costs savings, so don't forget tax and shipping when it applies to the comparisons.

CAMERAS

D1X................a dinosaur now and while folks try to unload them at silly prices, reasonable folks will sell you a nice one for 650 bucks or so.

D100..............Bested by the D70 in some respects, but still a good camera. Pay no more than 550-600 if it has the power grip and is in great shape.

D70...............The camera that got everyone on board, these are still a great pick and a nice one should not be much more than 400 bucks.

D70s.............Selling new for 620 to 675 before, about 500 bucks is about the max for a clean example..

D50...............Higher demand for these now because the D40 and D40x only works with AFS lenses, but paying much more than 500 for one is nuts since they were selling for that new.

D80............. A great camera that hits the right notes, generally selling used for about 700 dollars.

D200............ I sold mine for 1350 and that was a fair price. This is about to be DISCONTINUED and replaced with the Nikon D300, which appears to be a killer camera that will sell for 1799.00. It's hard to consider the D200 used for much beyond 1200 bucks and it should have some memory thrown in.

D2H............Old, but still great pro body. A mint body goes for around 1100-1200 bucks

D2Hs..........Improved model, but the 2000 dollar price range may not make much sense for a used unit with the D300 ready to possibly best it for less.

D2Xs...........This camera may actually be eclipsed by the D300 for 1/3 the price. I can't imagine even paying 2000 bucks for one at this point. It's a tough blow for recent owners of this camera.

FLASHES

SB-400......tiny flash is barely more than 100 dollars new. 75-80 bucks used.
SB-600.....about 125-145 used at the most. Just buy a new one otherwise.

SB800.......Top of the line model should be no more than 250-365 for a mint copy. 310.00 or so new.

LENSES....popular picks

18-70DX......D70 kit lenses is very good, 185-225 for mint copy.

18-200DX VR.....Easier to find now, about 650 for a mint copy, but probably smarter to buy new.

70-200 AF-S VR.....high end zoom commands a lot of cash even used. Easily sells in the 1300 dollar range for a mint copy.
80-400 AF-S VR......compact slow focus zoom brings about 1000 used.

Tamron 90 Macro.....macro zoom still has better glass than Nikon's 105vr, yet costs about 320 used.

20mm 2.8 AF-D.....underrated widish lens, many on the market in the low 300 dollar range.

28-200G......Newer version is a sweet pocket zoom and costs around 200 used. Better than the 18-200vr, but less versatile.

17-55DX....a great lens with a history of bad samples. 800-1000 used, but CHECK sample carefully!

17-35 2.8....Another great lens often selling used for under a grand, but check your sample!

Nikon 12-24....About 700-800 used, but find a good sample of a NEW Tokina 12-24 and don't look back.

Many sellers will bundle up cheap lenses and tripods to make a used package more attractive. They are often close to worthless. Be wary of well used cameras with high shutter counts. A good seller will use Opanda to tell you how many shutter clicks have been used. Shutters don't last forever. Whenever possible buy NEW Nikon gear from Authorized sellers. Sites such as Express camera, selling for well less than B&H or Ritz Camera are SCAM WEBSITES.
Do your homework before buying and happy shooting!

This list is still a little inflated for some items, but the worst content is the advice at the bottom that mentions reputable shops.

B&H is good. Adorama is good. Beach Camera is good.

To reiterate:

ANY online store selling for "prices too good to be true" or prices well below sellers like B&H, Ritz or Adorama are WITHOUT EXCEPTION...

SCAM WEBSITES

You're not going to get a D300 for 1399.00 with a 18-135 lens. EVER. They'll take your CC info and then call you to try and sell you the "special battery" for 300.00, or the "English version" of the camera for another 600.00 or the cables for 200.00. When you try to fight them and cancel, they might even try to hit you with a 20% restocking fee.

Obviously some people are ignorant and fall victim while others are simply stupid, but being stupid does not give someone the right to victimize you. If you fall prey to one of these scams contact your CC company and get info on them from Resellers website to make your case. The scammers will usually back down.

Cheers and have your pets spade and neutered. It's fun!

"Cheers and have your pets spade and neutered. It's fun! " ??????

Having your pets spade and neutered is fun??????

anyway, thanks for the advice.
Looking for another S5 or waiting for D300...

I paid $2500 USD for my D2xs it was used only a small amount with 3300 shutter releases. Its an excellent camera, beautiful colors, low enough noise for my needs, fast fps at 6.8mp... everything about the camera is dreamy... Its going to make a sweet second body to my new D3... :P

Amazing that someone who doesn't sell equipment or know someone who does nonetheless puts so much energy into a post with his take on pricing. In the end, you did offer the best advice. Individuals should do their homework. One pretty good tool, at least for items that are trading in some numbers is to look at ebay's completed auctions. There will be outlier final bids, but if there are enough auctions for a sample you can get a good idea of real user-to-user prices.

If you trade in equipment, don't expect to get market pricing from a camera retailer. And if you buy used equipment from a retailer, expect the asking price to be higher than user-to-user prices. You should expect to pay for the convenience of shopping with a retailer and understand that retailers have to make a profit on used equipment sales, so negotiate your best deal and expect to pay more or get less from your used equipment. You can usually do better selling your gear to another user and buying directly as well. But you also have more work to conduct the transaction and more risk.

I think spending 2500 $ on a used D2Xs, with D300 that will come soon, is waisting your money ...

Only if you have a big contract to deal with and be able to asume the loose of some 1000 $ then go for it ... But loosing 1000 $ on a 2 month base is even for professionnals too much.

I sold my D2X for 2600 $ just end of august just after D3/D300 announcements and since then i'm working with D200. My D3 & D300 have to arive begining of december as i've ordered them om august 25.

So the best thing to do is to sell when you want to replace(normaly after an announcement) et pre-order immediatly. You won't loose too much doing so.

It's the gear that make a photographer poor, the picture make them earn their living so
choose what to do ...

I think the D200 is a little high. I saw one yesterday with less than 1900 shutter actuations being sold for $1050 and that included a magnifying eyepiece and a Really Right Stuff "L" bracket, 2 batteries etc. Bargains are out there so keep looking but like the thread says, beware of scammers. If your selling anything, beware of those who want you to send your gear to Africa or some other third world contry and who will "send my agent to your house to pick it up".

The D2xs and D300 are the exact same specs minus a few hardware differences... D2xs professional build was 5 - 7000 brand new... D300 prosumer level 2995 brand new. I really couldn't care for live view mode or the 14bit 2.5fps. Plus I landed myself a new photographic job. My client is paying for my air fare and accommodation for me and my family for the shoot.

So good on ya...

thx :-)

Can anyone tell me what shutter count would be considered as low actuation?
I have been working with under 20,000, under 10000 to be light. I would consider over 50000 heavy.

I think it depends a lot on how many you plan on putting on the camera also. The heavier usage you anticipate, the lower the number you want.

I guess I would put this thread among those where if you get no use out of it, you would not respond. Ya know, like 90% of the posts on any forum.

But, that's just me.

You'd be lucky to get 60 to 65 percent of "market value" on a trade. That being said, a camera, or lens or widget is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay. Remember the ridiculous ramp up on older Nikon 70-200 F4AFs?

$1350 may be a fair price for you - the seller - but the buyer paid too much given that D200's can be found at keh.com, B+H and ADorama for about the same price with a warranty.

FWIW I paid $1299 for a NEW USA model from B+H in January.
